So they have released a Set figure and I have..... thoughts.....

First of all, credit where it is due - I think its brave of them - I like they are doing different Deities and Set, being Set, is a bold choice due to the inherent problems of trying to adapt the Set animal...

set animal 2.jpg

So what the hell actually IS the Set-animal? Entire monographs have been written on this subject for centuries with no consensus - the guesses range from Giraffe, Greyhound, Aardvark, Anteater, Oryx, Okapi (my personal choice), Fennec Fox (which I like due to the idea of a fox god of chaos being fitting), Hare, Desert Mouse, Tapir and Camel.
After all what creature has the body of a greyhound, a long curved snout, tall square ears and a stiff upright, and occassionally forked, tail?
The answer is none - it is a typhonic beast, a composite animal, a fictional monster that never existed in nature (despite some claiming it may be a now-extinct animal, there is nothing in the fossil record and no remains have ever been found).

This naturally raises a problem when trying to create artistic depictions of the creature in that artist interpretation will change the appearance drastically depending on their whim.

This problem is merely exacerbated when creating 3D art I imagine.

So - there are two ways of adapting Seth in mainstream media - the first is to try and recreate the Typhonic/Set animal... OR to simply choose one of the many animals Seth MAY be and stick with that.

TBLeague chose the latter.....

Rather than tackle the Set animal (which I understand to a degree), TBLeague instead chose to make
SET -
the God of Chaos, Evil, Storms, War, the Desert, the Defender of Ra, Bane of Apep... into a rather goofy looking donkey....
Screen_Shot_2020-07-17_at_3.09.25_PM.png

I truly think pretty much anything else might have been better - in truth ANY choice of animal for Set is as correct/incorrect as another - they are ALL equally speculative. So choose something cool, or better yet, forget the desire to base Set on a real animal and just go ALL IN on adapting the Typhonic/Set beast - for me the most important thing with this is the effect the character is supposed to have.
Set Is supposed to be terrifying, a god of evil, terror, make him look positively demonic, satanic, make him look evil make him look BADASS.
.... this is just... awful.
To be fair, I think TBLeague knows this and thats why there is literally only 1 picture over the two figures showing a close up of the head and the rest of the pictures have this awful donkey head covered up by a fairly cool looking Stargate-esque mask/helmet to hide Set's shame.
set 3.jpg

set 4.jpg

set 5.jpg

Unfortunately the helmet is the coolest thing about this figure, the armour is pretty basic and boring, the base is also a little boring, he lacks his iconic was sceptre...
so much missed potential here, given that Set is such an important deity over such a cool set of dominions I expected some more inspiration from TBLeague, he is a war-god, storm-god, and devil-figure in one package with a strange demon-animal for a head AND YOU CHOSE A DONKEY.

So yeah, probably not one to buy for me, hopefully they decide to completely reimagine the character in a 2.0 down the line, but honestly I doubt it.

Man, what a thorough review. And hilariously on point. I appreciate they're trying things with Bast and Set but they keep completely missing the mark. If you're going to go to this crazy fantasty style design for these figures, make something badass and fierce. Instead we've gotten, shocked hawk face, weird scowling house cat with G cup ****, and goofy donkey. (Thankfully they fixed the Bast body and tried to fix the head, for the first time ever)

I still need to get around to posting my set of figures from this collection, I had forgotten until you posted.

Couldn't agree more!

Absolutely, some of the decisions have been.... strange. Especially Bast - her **** were twice the size of her head!!! Who thought that was a good idea!
(Thankfully they fixed the Bast body and tried to fix the head, for the first time ever)
Have they? Did they fix it in the production line or are they doing a 2.0? Would love to know how they are addressing it.

Sounds good! Can't wait to see!

Yeah during production there was such a huge backlash they changed the figure. She came out with a smaller bust and they sized up the head (barely!). The fact that they actually changed the figure was a first I'd ever seen from Tbleague/Phicen in the last 5 years.

Here was the original figure:
20210813_145629_067__91018.1638721228.1000.1200.jpg

And then after the updates:
B11__93307.1630952786.jpg

I think all they did was change it to the Month body. Which eventually became the S46/S47 body.

Wow, I had no idea about the original Bastet. Glad that they changed it and seem to have stuck to smaller bodies for the female figures, I shudder to think what Aset would've looked like had that not happened.

Pretty stoked to share my Egyptian lineup. Technically these don't really qualify as part of the Egyptian Gods lineup since none of them are the actual Gods, but they're close and this is the only active thread...

These are actually the figures I change up the most in my collection because of the seamless bodies and cost point. So I'll kind of give my review and breakdown (Warning - lots of pictures)

The first figure I picked up was Cleopatra. I considered Anck Su Namun but her outfit was just too ridiculous and sexualized for me to justify it. Anyway, honestly, Cleopatra is my favorite figure from the bunch. The head sculpt is gorgeous, her crown piece is really well done, lots of accessories, including her base with the Sphinx sculpture, her outfit and bust (although a lot more exposed than I would like) was reasonably sized, and the body is a unique release from TBL in that it's actually slightly tan, compared to their standard "suntan" releases. Also I know the figure gets a lot of **** for white washing, but Cleopatra was supposedly Greek! But not an exotic beauty by any means...

IMG_20211208_214449_Bokeh.jpg

After Cleopatra was Nefertiti. And I have mixed feelings on this figure. The head sculpt is gorgeous, an incredible follow up to Cleopatra. But her head piece not being removable was frustrating. The second issue I ran into is that her body did not have detachable feet. So she can't stand without a brace. Then the elephant in the room, her bust is absolutely laughable. I mean, it literally ruins the figure for me. So I figured I'd source a better body with detachable feet and smaller bust. Well, her top piece just doesn't sit well on a smaller bust, because TBL didn't go to the string tie pieces until after Nefertiti. Essentially the molded plastic just won't sit right because it's an entire piece with a small fastener at the front. So, I got the same body with detachable feet and had to live with it. Other than that, the hands were pretty new, with all the jewelry and long nails, and the outfit aesthetic overall is nice enough. I do like the figure overall, but I tend not to highlight her when I show my collection.

IMG_20210903_014158_Bokeh.jpg

From there I had Month and Bast in mind. But the head sculpts just didn't land for me as I said. But I really liked their outfits. So I sourced bodies for them. Pretty happy with how they came out. I think the Bast set is one of the best looking female sets in the Egyptian lineup. It just oozes goddess/royalty. Actual dangling chains and nice fabric, a massive wired cape, modest enough to be reasonable, fantastic.
IMG_20220422_015443_Bokeh__01.jpg

Last one I picked up was King Tut, who would be my favorite from the bunch, but I have some nostalgia for Cleopatra being my first figure from TBL. What a perfect blend of fantasy and history. Is he an undead King Tut, since he has the mask? Or some kind of weird living version wearing the mask for power? I don't know, I thought it was fun. Layers upon layers make up the outfit, tons of accessories, a beautifully sculpted throne/chair and all at a great price? I mean, I love this guy. I actually bought up most of the pieces of the black version when he was parted out, cause I'll probably put something to go with the black version of Aset.

IMG_20211211_004148_Bokeh__01__02.jpg

A few side notes and honorable mentions, if I had the space I'd buy most of these, but I'm a sucker for the females and I'm already out of places to put things:

Horus v2 looks badass and was one of the releases I think they did well for making something look fierce with the ripped cloak and the wings. I would have loved to get the white version. Osiris I think was another great mention, his armor looked really fitting and the 3 different options were pretty sick. Sobek's head sculpt came out really well compared to the other animalistic head sculpts they were working on, but the outfits are starting to fall into that same-y kind of feel when you have 5 or 6 others with the exact same kind of look. And finally, this one for Seth, it's... The head sculpt is just bad, the set looks great otherwise, but another in that same-y kind of feel as the previous 5 or 6.

That's my review, I eagerly await the white and black Asets that I have on order... Now to find room for them...

I'd never seen the final release of Cleopatra before, she looks fantastic. Hope they do a re-run of her at some point.

I like the takes on Month and Bastet - I personally quite like the head sculpts they come with but in terms of having them fit in with Aset it's a good choice to have them with human features instead. The costumes still look great too.

She's definitely a figure I would love if they did a rerun of, even though I already own her. Their quality has gone up so significantly, especially in the last year or so. You look back at their lineup from years ago and a lot of them just look like a half *** costume from a ****o. But now they've had releases like the elf archers, some of the Spartans and knights and their newer Egyptian Gods line and they look fantastic. Only thing is, have TBL ever done a rerun of anything?

That's kind of the way I was going, just keep everyone human. For better or worse. I do actually like the Month head sculpt, I even bought it, but Bast I'm so disappointed. They could have done some fierce panther or jaguar or something but they chose house cat.

Fantastic pictures @BladeS - great poses and you are tempting me with that King Tut!
I see what you mean about the cleavage - it is VERY distracting and can become comical all too easily and detract from the figure.

I too was hoping for a more fierce Cat choice for Bastet, like a caracal, jungle cat, jaguar, african golden cat or some other but to be fair she was depicted more and more commonly as a house cat in later dynasties... so it is forgivable, here's hoping they do Sekhmet justice - she MUST be a fierce and terrifying Lioness goddess.

Thank you! This set is one of the favorite parts of my collection and I tend not to share it much because most people would rather just be wow'd by things like marvel and star wars.

I just love Egyptian mythology and the aesthetic, even if this set is more fantasy Egyptian and a little ridiculous, it's a fun nod to history. So it's great to share with you guys who understand.

If you're on the fence about King Tut definitely go for it! Black or white versions you can't go wrong. And the big *** throne chair has so much versatility and for such a great price. And you can even swap the mask for a regular head sculpt if you want just a standard male Egyptian king of some kind. It's one of their best releases and I see a lot of people who aren't interested in the line pick him up.

Sobek has arrived!!!
Yes, he looks INCREDIBLE.
So there is good news and bad news - the bad news is that, as we expected, the figures only seem to have 1 head and the heads are fixed in either a closed or open mouth position.
The good news is that the Sobek figure is probably, in my humble opinion, the absolute best figure in the line so far. The quality of the figure is incredible, the head sculpt is HUGE, so detailed and honestly just blows me away.
The costume feels more accurate to Ancient Egypt with a slight fantasy edge, this is certainly the figure that most feels authentic to representing the Egyptian deities.
Tailoring, sculpting, painting - all fantastic, some very smart choices made here (the two separate sculpts aside).
The diorama base feels high quality and looks very good without drawing focus away from Sobek.
I'm glad I went with the white version - it looks far, far better than even I thought it would and better than the prototype pics even. I love the snarling/roaring head and the white clothing/accents really helps sell this character's divine presence.
I love it, easily one of my favorites in my whole collection, and definitely my favourite among the TBLeague Egyptian line.
Must buy.

My original plan was to pick up a parted out version of the other head, but honestly I might just stick with this one - it looks fantastic. I probably will if I find the other at the right price - I like to have the option.
I haven't displayed him with his other accessories/weapons - 1. because I like this slightly less busy look, 2. because I can't for the life of me figure out the holster.

If only they made all of these figures with this much care and looking this awesome (looking at you Set you ******* donkey)

Completely agree, that's what really draws me to this version of Tutankhamun - he feels mysterious or even undead, like an Egyptian Lich almost or even somewhat like The Goa'uld Ra from the Stargate movie/series, the mask makes him feel both more and less than human - a monstrous other

Seriously tempted now... you are a bad (good?) influence @BladeS !
I agree, this wasn't a line I was originally going to jump on, but I am very glad I have, I love that it is so different from the usual fare and like you I am a huge fan of Egyptian mythology and think it has/will produce some unique and interesting figures that stand apart from the rest of the collection and the usual big collector franchises.
The fantasy element is just a little fun and ridiculous, but I dont mean that in a bad way - it allows a bit more freedom to creating a cool figure without being dogmatic in its recreation of Ancient Egyptian styles/materials etc.
Sometimes it strays a little too far from the source for my tastes though, so it is a fine line.
For example I REALLY wanted to like the Osiris, but he doesn't look Egyptian enough to me, I would have preferred if they made Osiris seem a little more undead, kind of like the Tut figure. But I can see that their take on the character is interesting and creative.

Horus v2 looks badass and was one of the releases I think they did well for making something look fierce with the ripped cloak and the wings. I would have loved to get the white version.
The white Horus 2.0 is definately on my "buy if/when have more money/space" list - it just looks too good to leave aside, the diorama alone looks incredible. I am a tiny bit dissapointed that they never corrected Horus lacking his most iconic regalia - the double crown of Egypt and/or his nemes - from both versions. But the figure still looks great.

Which deity/pharaoh are you looking forward to most next? I would love either Thoth, Sekhmet or Tawaret.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize he was out already. That was fast. I'm really surprised they didn't give you two head sculpts, just about all the other figures got a neutral and a dynamic face I thought? But in this case, the open mouth one is pretty awesome, so you could just pick up the neutral one as a parted out piece. Definitely agree that it's an awesome figure though, the white fabric material looks REALLY nice with the gold lining on it, and all the gold accessories really shine through. I really love that they're getting the metallic look down significantly better than in the past. Their older figures just looked like shiny plastic, but this one really looks way more like a metallic gold. Also props to TBL for still doing killer and unique dioramas/bases. I've got the sphinx with Cleopatra, the big throne chair with King Tut, Sobek has this crumbling stone, there's variety you know? ... Love to see it.

You will absolutely not regret the King Tut purchase, I just hope you can still find him and at a decent price. I think I paid like 180 for him. For perspective, the chair is so massive it even ships separate of the figure.

Now that you mention Osiris, I kind of see it. I actually really like that figure, but with a second perspective, he does appear as more of like a fantasy soldier/knight more than an Egyptian. But I still think he has damn good presence.

Definitely Sekhmet. Tawaret will be interesting if they can pull it off, but I don't think I'd be interested in her. Although speaking of... with the popularity of Moon Knight I'd be kind of interested if they do a Khonshu/Khonsu.

Sadly at this point I have 0 space for any more figures. I don't even know what I'm going to do with Aset yet. Probably swap them in for my kitbashes. So, it has to be something that I absolutely cannot live without for me to pick anything else up.

Aset black and white versions are shipping out in the next day or two.

My body is ready.

My collection space is not.

It took some work, but I completed my setup. Big picture dump incoming.

First, did a few reposes. I mostly did this to see if I could take any of these out and replace them with Aset. I couldn't.
IMG_20220603_004941__01__01.jpg

Also remember this Cleopatra head piece, you'll see the top of it a little further down on the new figures. Kinda lazy of TBL, but oh well, it's fine. Most people won't notice it. I know I didn't until I was going over these photos.

I could write up another 500 word essay on how much I love these, but I'll keep this one short. TBL is improving so much and I'm absolutely here for it. These don't feel like just purely big tiddy 1/6 figures (Nefertiti). They have wonderful design and detail. Proportions are perfect (finally!). I love the wings for both, all the accessories are great. Amazing detail on the hands and sandals. Couldn't be happier with these. I think my only complaint is that I don't love the head sculpt for the black version, something about its expression is a little off to me. But it's a minor nitpick. On the opposite side, the white head sculpt is fantastically unique. Love these so much.

And finally, their final resting place, which I think came out fantastic. Only thing is they will accrue dust over time, but that's just how it goes.

Fantastic pictures @BladeS !!
Aset does look good, far better than I expected - I must admit I would be very tempted to get her if she weren't quite so obviously Caucasian.
Do you think, having them in hand as you do, that it might be possible to remove the Egyptian elements like the costume/crown/wings/etc. and put them on a different body?
Also does the black version of Aset come with the wings or just the cape?
Probably completely unfeasible but maybe worth asking.
Also - how do the wings connect? I'm curious

Thanks man!! I've had to kind of overlook that every single figure from their Egyptian line is white washed. But it's the best we're going to get.

You can absolutely strip the figure down pretty easily. The skirt is just velcro, the crown slides on and off. The top piece is just tied with string. The wings attach with holes in the back of the body and pegs in the wings themselves.

Both figures come with wings and capes. The wings for the black version differ design wise from the white ones. They're a little more upward styled.

I'm traveling for work or I'd show you pictures, but the silicone body has holes in the back for the wings. And if you don't use the wings they give you a cover plate that meshes with her top piece.

Finally got the Tutankhamun figure and I couldn't be happier!
He is fantastic, probably my joint favourite with Sobek, so many details in his design!
I've posed him on his throne in a regal/commanding pose - I've moved the right side of his tunic over and have bunched it over to his left side around the back in order to give him a more asymmetrical design.
In doing so I found even more details I never would have thought to look for, for example the crossed wings motif on his chest are actually fully engravings of falcons that embrace his entire torso from the side of his chestplate armour! I just love stuff like that.
This is a seriously impressive piece - thank you @BladeS for talking me into getting him! :ROFLMAO:
It also helps that I got him for a bargain in the end.
