That was one aspect or subset of the broader scene. It wasn't nearly as cookie cutter as people make it out to be.

It probably began with Stoker when he popularised the modern vampire as a suave and sophisticated count. A hundred years later they got sparkly too.

Vampires in Romanian folklore were more base and outwardly monstrous.



Batman conforms to the Stoker type: a sophisticated creature of the night capable of appearing as a monster. While he broods in his 'castle' he's making plans and taking action, rather than moping like an emo teenager. lol

Both Dracula & Frankenstein are filled with sappy romanticism and brooding. About 80% of what Frankenstein does in the book is go on tangents about how much he loves his family. In Dracula the entire book is about how great Lucy is, and then Lucy's simps going on fetch quests. All those books were heavily "schlocky" in the romance aspect. It was never a genre about B-Horror tier monsters and 'atmosphere'. Dracula's about 1/3rd the repeat of Dracula draining Lucy, Van Helsing and her simps giving her blood, talking about how great she is, and then repeating it over and over again for near 100 pages. Frankenstein specifically is a very emotional book, period. I think the idea of those novels has won over their actual content.

From what little I've seen of Twilight I still contend that's a stretch; I grew up in that scene. Twilight vampires and werewolves have more in common with faeries in the mythic sense. I don't know what Bloodborne is.

I’ve never read/watched Twilight, just random tidbits so I know it’s sappy. I’m no fan of overtly emotional and lovey-dovey stuff, and I was never into the full-on Emo subculture. I did prefer “Goth”. My point is hat the original novels, from Dracula to Ruthven, being Victorian and all, were overtly sentimental and sappy if read in the modern day. Granted, Frankenstein was more philosophical, but they were very emotional books. I understand people not wanting Batman to be a literal 2000s Emo, but a 20s Bruce being overemotional in his brooding isn’t weird to me. And Gothic contains a lot of sappy at times romance in it.

Bloodborne’s a Lovecraftian game, from the guys who made the Dark/Demon’s Souls ones. It’s got an excellent Gothic atmosphere, though I’ve never played it since I didn’t buy a PS4. I hope it gets a port to PC.

Batman isn’t supposed to be a hulking giant man. I hate that depiction. He’s a stealthy ninja who blends in the shadows and is more athletic in build.

Yup. He’s in his early 30s abd even that isn’t weird. He’s pretty emo and sad all the time. That’s just his thing . It’s not twilight level but it’s still pretty close.
