Do you mean "goth", like subculture fashion? That's not the same as Gothic as in literature, film which Kane and Finger channeled. And it certainly wasn't emo.

The whole point of the character is doesn't stay in his room crying.

But yet he does . He stays in his room brooding all day . Especially when he was younger and angrier. He would only leave the cave to beat up bad guys horribly before he mellowed out.
