"the bat look" has the thick neck. That^ is not an apt parallel. since that would not correspond to his (collar)neck (see below), but his shoulders and where the "hand" splays out on the classic Batman silhouettes.
The thick neck is still there underneath on a bat...
What the thick neck Batman cowl references, is the heavy weight of that neck straight down into the torso, which gives him the aggressive beastly look of the bat.
The tapering in neck of DK Bale, now on Pattinson (while it gives more mobility) completely betrays the thick neck look Batman has always had,
And instead makes him more feline.
The added collar (for better or worse). here somewhat works to compensate for that lost classic Batman silhouettes, while also references more romanticized predecessors Darcula , Zorro, etc.
