We just gotta hope the Disney dub-title fiasco is over with and fans won't have to import the Japanese Ghibli discs just to get a true translation of the material

It's an old story, but the Disney Castle in the Sky bluray release was given dubtitles instead of having a properly translated subtitle track on it. Disney haters (like me, admittedly) think it's because Castle in the Sky is a Gulliver's Travels story which Disney does not own. So a lot of the references to it by name was taken out, and we were left with a poorly translated dubtitle track that changed entire words and phrases even though you could clearly hear the Japanese dialogue still referring to them.

DVDBeaver gave a a review and some screenshots showing the difference in sub/dub title tracks between the original translation (which is included in every non N. American release) and the new Disney one.

I've been buying the Japanese Blu-rays to watch the Japanese version and the American Blu-rays to watch the English version. This is the only time I double-dip because I love the look of the Japanese releases, but want to support Disney's American releases.

Why I Doubt Disney Is Releasing The Unaltered STAR WARS OT On Blu


There's one very simple reason.

Comicbook.com is reporting that Disney plans to release the original Star Wars trilogy in their original, untouched form, on Blu-ray. The report claims that Disney has been hampered by getting the orginal negatives into good shape. There's one problem with this report:


Disney doesn't own Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. Fox does. They also own the distribution rights to the Prequels.


The rights to Empire and Jedi and the Prequels will revert to Lucasfilm (and thus Disney) in 2020, but Fox will retain the rights to Star Wars forever. In perpetuity. And they'll never give it up. Will they work with Disney to do some sort of release? Sure - there's a lot of money to be made. But unless a deal has been quietly made to give Disney the distribution rights to the original trilogy, there's no chance the Mouse House is working on a rerelease. Now, if the report said that Fox was working on a new Blu, I might believe it. But if the sources don't even know who owns the movies, how can they know anything about remastering or release plans for them?


And there's one more wrinkle I've heard from sources at Fox: as long as George Lucas is alive they're not willing (or able? I'm not clear here) to go against his wishes and release the untouched originals. That was the situation earlier this year, when a rumor about a rerelease of the untouched originals was circulating. Unless something has changed in-house I wouldn't expect movement on these in the immediate
