Been away for a couple of days again, so forgive me if I point out things that have already been discussed...
First off, I'm a bit depressed with the appearance of Luke Skywalker. I mean, it was inevitable and expected, but it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. The idea that you can "clone" actors and have them reprise or expand their roles just bothers me. What is next? Will they bring Harrison Ford back as Han Solo? And Carrie Fisher as Leia? It just seems like a lie in a very profound way. At least when a role was recast the new actor imbued the character with their ideas and personality, and it was transparent for the audience. Think of it this way: if they'd had this technology before, maybe we wouldn't have had Ewan's amazing take on Obi Wan. What a tremendous loss that would have been. Even though I marvelled at how good the deepfake was, I didn't really enjoy seeing pseudo-Mark Hamill there. It felt like lie.
So yeah, this worries me a lot going forward, for the industry as a whole.
On the other hand, watching the episode, it struck me just how big this Star Wars universe could become (despite the fact that they keep going back to the same old characters and places). Seeing Luke there, interacting with Ahsoka and Grogu, really showed what a massive, interconnected universe this is. From the movies, to the comics, to the novels, to the animated series and now the live action series, it is just phenomenally big. Talk about Modern Myth. If only they had recast Luke... I would have preferred that over this animated zombie.
On a side note, two minor observations:
- Is it me, or does this show sorely miss (amongst other things) George Lucas' input on sound design? The ships really don't sound as impressive as they do in Lucas' films.
- Does anybody else find that the Pyke Syndicate guys have more than a passing resemblance to old caricatures of evil Chinese lords (think Fu Manchu)? The slanted eyes, the droopy moustache...
