I'm glad I have no investment in Boba Fett, I always found him to be overrated (though Mr. Bulloch was a true gentleman). The series is ok going towards mediocre at best, Mando steals the show, maybe that is the purpose in the end. I'll watch it of course, as well as other series and films, but for me this patch explains it all, despite liking Rogue One, Mando and even Solo, OT rules in my books:

SW I love all 3 Star Wars films.jpg

Been away for a couple of days again, so forgive me if I point out things that have already been discussed...

First off, I'm a bit depressed with the appearance of Luke Skywalker. I mean, it was inevitable and expected, but it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. The idea that you can "clone" actors and have them reprise or expand their roles just bothers me. What is next? Will they bring Harrison Ford back as Han Solo? And Carrie Fisher as Leia? It just seems like a lie in a very profound way. At least when a role was recast the new actor imbued the character with their ideas and personality, and it was transparent for the audience. Think of it this way: if they'd had this technology before, maybe we wouldn't have had Ewan's amazing take on Obi Wan. What a tremendous loss that would have been. Even though I marvelled at how good the deepfake was, I didn't really enjoy seeing pseudo-Mark Hamill there. It felt like lie.
So yeah, this worries me a lot going forward, for the industry as a whole.

On the other hand, watching the episode, it struck me just how big this Star Wars universe could become (despite the fact that they keep going back to the same old characters and places). Seeing Luke there, interacting with Ahsoka and Grogu, really showed what a massive, interconnected universe this is. From the movies, to the comics, to the novels, to the animated series and now the live action series, it is just phenomenally big. Talk about Modern Myth. If only they had recast Luke... I would have preferred that over this animated zombie.

On a side note, two minor observations:

- Is it me, or does this show sorely miss (amongst other things) George Lucas' input on sound design? The ships really don't sound as impressive as they do in Lucas' films.
- Does anybody else find that the Pyke Syndicate guys have more than a passing resemblance to old caricatures of evil Chinese lords (think Fu Manchu)? The slanted eyes, the droopy moustache...

If the actors sign off on it with proper compensation who are we to complain besides leave my Hamill Luke alone he is my # 1 pop culture anything so please have patience one day you will get your lame Sebastian Stan fake Luke :gah: but in the mean time let me enjoy my return to childhood with real fake Luke lol

Sound effects have been good enough for me.

I do also see the Fu Manchu connection isn’t it great lol

The thing is, Sebastian Stan is the right age & has the look right now. By the time they decide to go that direction they'll have to de-age HIM. :lol

Don't get me wrong, I love Hamill and the deep fake is impressive, but what they've given us thus far is a very bland, wooden Luke Skywalker. Hamill's not getting any younger, so if they want to continue with telling stories that include his character IMO another actor is required. Let Luke be the James Bond of SW. That way who knows, he might even get to kiss someone other than his sister.

i think a big factor in putting young luke in these shows is because of the blowblack about luke in the new movies. so many people wanted to see luke again and we didn’t quite get that lol.

this is disneys apology without actually apologizing.

Of course it's a lie...they have been using technology almost forever to lie, deceive, and propagate, except they use this one (for now) for entertainment.

I'd actually love it if they erased Ewan McGregor and replaced him with a de-aged Alec Guinness, as long as they could fake the voice as well.

Then erase Hayden Christensen and replace him with a de-aged Sebastian Shaw. :lol

Though he might get confused with Boba Fett....

There still exists a line between homage and -- as I've said -- hamfisted mimicry. I believe that line has been crossed both here and at times in The Mandalorian. YMMV.
Yeah, but while this forum may be stuffed with folks who know lots of stuff, that's not true of everyone out there including upcoming generations.

So while I *&^% about rehash, there's always gonna be depictions of classic archetypes and homages to older material. Lucas & co. were inspired by what they loved; years from now another filmmaker will be inspired by "those old Indiana Jones movies".

Don't have a problem with that so much as Death Star #2:banghead and then there was the phallic Death Star that-happened-to-lay-on-the ground. Even small stuff like if there were Jedi temples scattered about the universe, why couldn't Grogu have been at one of those, instead of *bleep* Coruscant (again). I liked the remnants of the temple on Tython and the temple at Lothal; they could have done something interesting.

Okay, somehow I'm not sure I'm getting my point across. I have no problem with a gunslinger archetype, Spaghetti Western or Samurai tropes.

My issue is with the execution. Han Solo was subtle. Very slight drawl (in ANH anyway), low-slung gun belt, quick on the draw, used to killin'. Okay I get it. You heard spurs clinking when Boba Fett walked in ESB, he had a tattered poncho thing. Okay neat.

But Vanth is so obviously a Cowboy all he needs is a horse and cowboy boots. There is zero subtlety there; Cad Bane as well.

"LOOK EVERYBODY IT'S A WESTERN IN SPACE. THEY'RE COWBOYS BUT THEY'RE IN SPACE!"

At least that's what it looks like to me, which is why I think Filoni and company have been watching too much Firefly. Which ironically enough, probably took some inspiration from Star Wars.

By now everything has been done before. It's either homage or repetition, and Lucas was known for cutting and pasting whole scenes from the 1930s and 1940s into Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

In their way TM and TBOBF are keeping with that tradition. They pulled Raylan Givens out of Justified and put him into Star Wars, retaining his mannerisms and even his dialogue. The only thing that may feel out of place is that the original and the homage are so close together timewise. Yet, the Givens character is itself a call back to older types, such as Eastwood.

There are things in TBOBF that felt completely out of place but for me Cobb Vanth/Timothy Olyphant wasn't one of them, because he fits the universe.

The Mandalorian also did it with the Akira Kurosawa themed episode that featured Ahsoka.
Yes copying and pasting into Star Wars goes all the way back to the very beginning. Just watch the finale of Dam Busters before ANH to see one of the most blatant but there are many other examples.

Thing is I've always thought of it as being a space western.

Even when you consider the desert of Tatooine, and the bar that's referred to as a "cantina" which implies Mexico or somewhere on the border. Brian Daley's early Han Solo trilogy ran with the gunslinger aspect. The films gradually moved away from it as the Jedi/Sith angle became more prominent, and force powers became stronger until the western began to be supplanted by the 'superhero' genre.

What I liked about The Mandalorian when it began was that it was back to the western again. Then the brat showed up.

Yeah, but if they had had Stan in there, there wouldn't have been entire sequence with someone fighting with a hood on; which threw me right out of the scene.

I get it, for the fans etc. But then again, I wasn't thrilled the show slid that direction anyway. Plus, assuming Grogu runs back to daddy, then the only point to the whole IMO premature appearance of Luke (who should have had an end Mando finale appearance) is basically Grogu got a side trip to a mind/body spa while his parent worried, gave Grogu an expensive present, and then picked up a sweet new impractical ride.

Like a parent sending their kid to camp; but the kid comes back with bad habits he picked up, like the ability to bounce 10 feet into the air. :bouncin

Still, it was a balm compared to watching more Boba rancour-cuddling while Fennec looks on disgustedly and texts Cara some more, looking for employment options.
But can't wait for the finale.:D
