Personally, I enjoy this show despite the over the top insanity of the violence, gore, and sex, not because of it. But it is in the spirit of the show to revel in all that stuff, and to be unflinching with all of it. And it's fine, but when I see a guy explode or have his face ripped off, or see a pretty graphic orgy scene, it's stuff I could get without having to see all the details. In other words, I personally think the personalities, situations, and conflicts are interesting enough without seeing all that, but I think it's Seth Rogan's sensibility, and suspect some of the younger audiences in particular get off on the pure visceral extremism of the show. You could argue that it's part of the satire, and like Robocop or A History of Violence, is a commentary on violence and sex in the media in general, but I don't give this show quite that much credit to be honest. They are doing it for the shock value, and to keep eyeballs on the screen. Without the violence and sex it may not have the popularity that it does.
