i just didn't feel any heart... it felt like a movie made by people who had seen a similar movie. i like the cast... i saw the potential... but it hit every "paint by number" on the list. the musical cues were especially distracting... amateurish... laughable... "this is when you should be scared"! in fact, i would say this was the film's biggest flaw... the sound did nothing but add to the cliche... perpetuate the stereotype... with sound being such a large part of what makes up a film, i think this one could have been more with a more original voice.

Saw it a couple nights ago. I liked it over all, but it wasn't a serious meditation on the subject by any means. The most effective scenes were in the middle before they hit a snag in the story. Now I'm not very familiar with the Perron case, but it appears they were supposed to be facing what they regarded as a demonic entity with various associated human spirits. Instead it got redirected to the "Bathsheeba Sherman" spirit, which (pun intended! :horror) completely downgraded the entire scope of the story imo. If a demon were present, wouldn't that entity be the dominant force? The Warrens were supposed to be experts in this area and here they are caught in a contradiction of sorts without a satisfactory explanation.

Anyway the final act was nice but due to the limited nature of the film, it was confined to a small period of time and had to falsely resolve the conflict. Also, the exorcist eye contacts are a cartoony cliche begging to be retired.

The whole truth of the film was this

"The devil does exist. God indeed exists. And for us, as people, our very destiny hinges upon which one we elect to follow."

Of course it's not the believers that Elect God,but it's God who Elects us..

Yea I wouldn't look at this as being true. That paranormal couple went on to Amityville, which was a complete fabrication. And a pretty good one at that.

Yeah I don't know too much about all the Warrens, but I do know that alot was added to the storyline. as the Perrons have said there was like 5 ghosts in that house but not the ones in the movie. Also from what I've read no demons like in the movie. Also Bathsheba wasn't a witch.

Bathsheba wasnt an old decrepit hag. she was pretty hawt. who in their right mind would mate with her if she was an old decrepit hag.

and fyi, the devils/demons was in the soundtrack. LOL

The only truth in this film was it was a movie that was pretty good.

O really Mr. Expert? Let me tell you a story real quick. Me and Dad have been hunting a demon called Azreal for about as long as i can remember and suddenly What the hell happens? He goes missing.
So I grab my kid brother and basically try and go across country to track him down while doing odd jobs along the way ,jobs that would make you piss yourself.

From motel to motel we traveled helping poor sons of *****es with paranormal things. This movie is just a cake walk compared to what me and my lil bro have seen. Im talking evil ghost, Sasquatches, vampires, Demons, angels, Hell even the Devil himself. Speaking of which that snobby son of a ***** wanted my little brother as a vessel so he can start the apocalypse which we stopped just in time.

Your welcome

So don't sit there in your recliner while munching on bagel bites and say that its just a movie. You have no idea the hell me and my brother have been through so people like you can live a happy life and sit at there computer and say "its just a movie". Your dead wrong. Fun fact if you ever run into a ghost. Grab the salt it works.

Okay that's it, you get the exorcism manual and I'll get the blessed beef jerky!

Damn are churches open this late on a Wednesday? I need about four buckets of Holy water and a Vatican sword dipped in holy wine. He wont go down easily.

A pretty damn good horror flick in the 70's style. It nailed the most important aspect of a horror film, the atmosphere. You could feel the dread. Loved the soundtrack.

:exactly:

Watched this last night and enjoyed it. I don't watch much horror so the cliched stuff didn't bother me and I thought the whole thing was generally pretty creepy. Music was great and like EVIL said, the atmosphere had real weight to it...the dread was tangible.

It is a film full of potential but like all of James Wan's horror films he takes misses the subtle cues and goes for the goofy boo scares.

What is it with him and his clown Make up ghosts??? Insidious 1 and 2 and this film have these ghost with globs of white make up and overdone eyes and lips... It just takes the scare factor out of it.

Ghost stories are best when they are subtle. It was creepy when the Warren lady was in the basement and she looked in the mirror and could see the woman crying with her child in her arms and when she turned around you could not really make out her face. Creepy right? Well then he tries to get you with the Boo scare and shows you the close up "she made me do it" of a fat woman in clown make up (again). Just not scary any more. But then he nails right after that with the Witch feet hanging (you cant see he rest of her) and they turn and come at Warren. This is much scarier then when the witch hovers over the mom with the goofy looking witch make up.

I know that in his mind it seems scary but he does not translate it well to film.

It was still pretty good. But IMO could have been much better. It had some good creepy moments but as I said they were sometimes ruined by over the top ones. I also did not care for the exorcism scene and thought that that again lacked subtlety and thus took me out of the film.

It was better then Insidious. That film was frustrating. It had a great first half but then turned into a comedy / carnival ride. My wife was too scared to go downstairs in the beginning of the film to get a drink but by the end of the film she went downstairs with no problem because the film just got so goofy.

I thought Sinister was a far creepier film then any of these but it does not seem to get the love :(

I also thought Lovely Molly and The Pact were far creepier films then The Conjuring.
