The end of TDK is taken in an unexpected direction sure - but that doesn't make it inconsistent. And it's a direction that is better than anything I'd expected in my mind
I think I recall that exchange going a bit differently.
A certain, "twisting the end of TDK, to fit TDKR's story" if I remember correctly. I think you even agreed to it somewhat that that's what they did.
Perfectly consistent? Come on.
epic nerdplosion
Yeah, but they projected that's where it was going and then Nolan pulled the rug from underneath everyone!
Why?
Ledger's death.
The more I think about it, the more I'm glad the Joker is in no way associated with this movie. It makes TDKR even more of an illogical departure from TDK.
He's arguably one of the best things from this series of films. Both in how he's written, as well as Ledger's portrayal of the character.
Joker gets a free pass and isn't tainted like most of the characters and messages that are warped from The Dark Knight to TDKR to appease the new story. He exists solely in Batman Begins (through that film's ending) and The Dark Knight.
I'm sure TDKR is the Joker's least favorite Batman film as well.

Wasn't the hole point of Nolan and co to give every movie a different theme and tone?
Reusing the LOS connection with a poorly written and executed main villain is a different theme?
Using the same characters or plot devices =/= same theme jyecat
Themes of TDKR are pain, and rising above it
BB is about fear and overcoming it and channelling anger through it to do good
Quite distinct themes connected by the chaos of TDK
Without digging through the thread I'd like to see your cliff notes version of how the themes of TDK don't mesh with TDKR so that I can respond to it when I get home. Please leave the he's not Batman enough arguments out though.
How do I do that without making it long and annoying everyone? Bullet points? I would still end up listing everything too, which would make it a long post. I'll end up including themes, characterizations, plots, hell even lolzy "who gives a ****" inconsequential examples like Ramirez, Coleman Reese, and all the others that were associated with "the Dent conspiracy" and how TDKR is contradictory.
You should look it all up, it's all in the confines of this thread. Beginning of August or some ****.

It starts here and goes on for pages and pages. There might be more before it. After Void tries to take it on, I ended up commenting again on it with another wordy post. Themes are in there somewhere.
HAVE FUN!
Alright. So after reading the link you posted I see no themes being discussed. I see that you dislike several plot points and that you take the 8 years of peace and the "hunting the dark knight" way too literally. Here's hoping for more in the next few pages.
Look I don't care what any of you say, the Star Wars prequels are $h!t. I mean it.
