Not really if the actor is good. When I watch star wars I don't think "oh well there's mark hamill" or when I watch tdk I don't think "oh well there's heath ledger." Or wheni watch fight club I don't think "oh well there's "Tyler durden." West would take you out of the experience just like stan lee's cameos. Yeah there cool and funny. But they completely remove you from the movie.
How do they remove you from the movie? In most cases its a quick scene with no action anyway so a little smile or laugh at seeing Lee is kind of neat... I mean "Hugh Heffner Lee" was funny in Iron Man.

Yeah it was funny, but it took you out. I dunno, maybe it's just me. But I like to get invested into the movie and when I see real life people cameoing themselves (lee) it throws me out completely.
I think its the smaller cameos that take you out more because the person is no one but Stan Lee or Adam West. Who here watched Thor and saw Padme instead of Jane or watched Sherlock Holmes and saw Tony Stark instead of Sherlock Holmes? We've been told these are entirely different people and they act differently so we buy them as being a different person.
I hate being taken out of movies. Short cameos don't bother me and in some ways I enjoy them. I love the Stan Lee cameos in Marvel movies just like I love Hitchcock's cameos in his own movies. Granted, Hitchcock's are much more subtle and easy to miss. Adam West in TDKR will take me out of the movie, but only for a second, but its not an idea I love either.
