The Costume
Here is the big deal, the wonderful outfit that made all the excitement on his announcement. I think it's easitly the best.

The boots aren't quite perfect; the paint job is muddy and a lot of the detail is lost with the globby paint job. Still, the design is great, and with these kind of figures it works. I just rubbed them a bit to lose some of the shine and they were great.

The inner pants and shirt are just right--a soft, cushy material which is how it should be. As the rangers would want to move silently in the forest, they intentionally wore very soft garb so muffle their movements, and I'm amazed that Sideshow picked up on that little costuming detail. Good job!

The leather jerkin--ah, that piece of art! It's everything I hoped it would be. The colors are beautiful, and this is THE BEST LEATHER OUTFIT SIDESHOW HAS MADE. Betther than Boromir's, Aragorn's, whatever. The laces are super intricate, and the imprint of the Tree of Gondor is PERFECT. Symetrical, clear, clean--it's just right. The leather guards on the shoulders are also superb, but be warned--they are very hard to keep in place, and take some time to get used to when posing him. I had a lot of troubles making them look right and keeping them in place, despite the fact that they are nevertheless AWESOME, regardless of their clumsy application.

The cloak. Oh, Sideshow. That cloak. It's a great material, drapes well, and looks fantastic. But it's BROWN. Brown. Oh, Sideshow. Why?

I give the costume 3 1/2 stars, because all in all it's just too detailed to give anything less, but the cloak color is just wrong. That kills it. Oh, and the boots are a bit glossy and the shoulder guards take some getting used to. But it's all just so COOL anyway!

The Figure

Oh, that Sideshow. Always doing strange things. Some good, and some wicked, dare I say sinful. There will be a heavy price for them to pay someday.

The body is great, but the shoulders on mine are way loose and he can't hold up his bow to save his life, which will someday cost somebody theirs (Sideshow?), but what can you do. It's no biggie.

The neck, however, is magic! It moves more than any Sideshow figure I've ever seen--I wasn't even sure it was one! It can go up, down, sideways, whatever--and stay there!!! Go figure!

The Sculpt

Again, I repeat. This is the best sculpt I've seen I LOVE how his hair looks; it's got volume, looks natural, and helps him stand out from the other figures. The face is perfect, and he just looks incredible. I love this sculpt, and couldn't be happier with it.

There are two things, though, I could be happier with.

The Paint

The substance used to make the head is nothing like that of the other figures, which is the normal Sideshow plastic. Oh no. This is some firm, but soft, rubber-like stuff. I can't describe it, except to say rubbery. It's just not right.

But the killer, oh the killer, is that paint job. Maybe somebody will get a good one and will want to trade it or something, but this just isn't like the others. It's shine, it's dark, and it's . . . well it's . . . it's gummy. Even a bit tacky, as in I could tell it was still sticky a few days ago. It's better now that I've aired him out, but it's very paint-like, not skin-like. And his eyes are slightly off, and kind of pink. Oh, and his hair should be lighter, like Boromir's. Part of the problem is they only used one color for the hair, so all the beautiful detail of that sculpt kind of gets lost. So while it actually is a fine job, on close inspection it loses its quality.

The figure gets 3 1/2 stars, because of those weak shoulders (yours may differ). The sculpt gets a 4 star perfect score, and the paint gets a 3, only because it's Faramir and I love him. Still, it's better than 95% of the figures on the market. I love him!

Now to the overall, Captain Faramir review of Faramir!!!

Overall Score

Well, after pouring over the minute details of the figure and assessing him to the best of my capacity, I put him on the shelf just to see him with the other figures. And, after the tears, and the joys, the laughing and the crying, everything suddenly came together. Suddenly the craftsmanship of the figure hit me, and I realized this was just as good as the previous releases, if not better. Yeah, they dropped the ball on the paint, and the cloak is brown, but suddenly on my shelf it just looked right. It really was the Faramir I've been waiting for, and that tells you everything.

If I had money I'd get a repaint by one of the masters, but I don't think I'll be able to afford that. Even so, he looks FANTASTIC. I couldn't believe the change--as I played with him and worked with him I was thinking no, what have they done? But suddenly it all pulled together, and I can say now, being the most crazy Faramir fan you can find and easily the most excruciatingly obsessive over every last detail, that this figure is GOLDEN. Fantastic. Superb. I give him, based on every last detail, 3 3/4 stars. Not utterly perfect--but magical enough not to care.

I know you're extremely biased and all, but there is no way in hell the paint apps are a 3. Unless you're on a scale of 10, which you are not. I agree the rest of the figure looks amazing (I love the costumes in this line and think they are the best of any 12" line). But you are always drawn to the head and it's a pity that this figure is damn near ruined by one of the worst paint jobs to date.

I guess it depends on your own tastes; my figure isn't too bad. Also the shine is enough to be caught on camera, but not so extreme in natural light. Still, if I could get a nice repaint I would. I stand by my three though; of course, it's all subjective anyway. I just love him.

I feel so . . . fulfilled!!!

Is Faramir packed the same way Maul was with the styrofoam on the top and bottom of the box, or with the traditional bubble wrap in tight fitting box?

As far as the paint goes, I don't know why they can't at least get the colors that the factory uses to match the colors of the prototype. I understand the paint isn't going to be as detailed or artful, but at least if the colros matched it wouldn't matter so much that the same definition and detail was't added.

The box ships in the old-fashioned bubble and tight fit scheme. Mine came in perfect condition though. And I agree with the colors; why so dark?

Oh well. Still love him, though it will be kind of odd. Don't let it turn you off though guys, I'd still get him.

Captain, I'm glad you like him. I can't think of anyone who's anticipated a figure as much besides Tom and his Fett PF (of course just imagine how I'll be if they ever announce a Shaak Ti :D )

Hopefully one of the fantastic artists here can hook you up with a killer repaint.

Thanks! You have no idea how much I would want that. Sadly I doubt I could afford that, especially Les or Hunky or their peers. It's just too much for me (I've been saving enough for this figure as is!). Still, once I get more someday, I'd love to send him in to get the best repaint possible. THAT would make him PERFECT!!! Someday . . .

Well, I'd say your due for your figure next. Let's get Shaak Ti Sideshow!!!

Glad ya like him so Much Cap and know the feeling with wanting a Maul 1:6th and PF so badly. I'm looking forward to getting mine on Thursday.

I guess you better hope that SS doesn't get around to making a Faramir PF huh?

Mine just arrived. Here's a quick pic straight from the box:

FaramirArrives.jpg

First impressions: His outfit is amazing!!! Tons of texture and mixed materials, straps, buckles, ties... really cool. His QUIVER is also awesome, great material, some kind of woven texture. The face: looks good from afar, a bit shiny on mine; plasticy.

First Yavin Luke, now this...why is the paint so shiny? It really makes him look a bit garish...and as you say, "plasticy". Are they still clear-coating the eyes? (Luke's weren't).

I'll ask again...has Sideshow switched paint houses?

The costume does look well-detailed, but like Aragorn's, a little "newer" and less weatehred than the proto pics showed...

Still...he looks like another good LOTR entry....

Oh, and Captain....I'm delighted that you're enjoying this figure so much...I know it's been a long time coming and your enthusiasm has lit up this board! Congratulations...now, don't forget those pictures!
(I'll have some nice outdoor shots for you, but it'll be awhile....)

Just got mine today and it's definitely a great figure and equal to Boromir I think. The beard is a bit shiny, but in most light it looks fine. The costume is flawless (albeit a tad too clean), and these are absolutely the finest bow drawing hands they've ever done. Posing him in a natural looking shooting pose is the easiest of all the figures so far.

Sure there have only been 3 figures so far, but this is shaping up to be a great line. Too bad it takes so darn long in between!

Yay! Dave I'm so glad you like it! It's a shame mine is so slightly off (his eyes barely point in different directions) but it's still SUPER great. I love this guy, and you're right, those hands are amazing! Of all the Sideshow figures I own he definitely has the best hand selection, even beyond Legolas.
