Finally saw this today. Loved it. Maybe not as fun as AUJ but a lot darker which was great.

Things that stood out:

- Obviously Smaug. Loved his design and every scene he was in. I wasn't expecting to see him in so much action in the final act so it exceeded my expectations.

- The river ambush was one of the best 3D scenes I've seen in the cinema. It was both fun and relentless.

- Finally, Tauriel was the highlight for me. Beautiful & badass. She was one of, if not the best thing in the movie (apart from Smaug :D).

An Unexpected Journey was much better IMO. I give it an A.

I was not a fan of Smaug...not enough Gandalf and just boring at times. :( I would give it a C.

Oh well.

Did Tolkien write anything on the History of the Dragons or the areas they came from?

Also, what was up with Thanduril's face melting away on the check? I know he mentioned he fought dragons before, but I don't know what's up with the cheek.

Thranduil has been burned by dragon fire before, and has used elven magic to cloak his disfigurement.

As for Smaug, there has been many dragons of cinema, some more impressive than others, but Smaug has been the one true wyrm in cinematic history.

All first age stuff... All of them were born then...Smaug and others were young baby dragons that escaped from the Wrath of the Valar...Along with Shelob and the last Balrog...Ancaligon the Black was the biggest/baddest...Glaurung was the first(no wings though)...Thranduil remembers those good ole days

What about Puff? He even wears a bowtie.

you thought this was boring, but not UJ? UJ was hella boring at times, there was way more action and fight scenes in this one. And any scene with Tauriel in it was pure gold. UJ had prolly 15-20 minutes of Bilbo playing riddles with Gollum and a bunch of Dwarves stuffing their faces.

The riddles in the dark sequence was easily the best thing about An Unexpected Journey. That, and seeing Frodo.
