I don't think you catch the drift of my argument Teddy. No one is saying not to talk about the darkness of humanity or history here (though I would hope more would learn about Hitler through books than dramatic movies :lol ). In Downfall, despite the fact that Hitler came off as a human being, you never forgot who Hitler was and what he did. I doubt anyone apart from Nazi sympathizers walked out of that movie thinking--y'know what, Hitler was pretty cool!

I don't know much about the character this new film is about, but it appears he killed people for kicks and was a genuine serial killer without any remorse or scruples. If they show this guy to be what he really was, then that's great. But if they downplay what he was, making him appear a bit more likable than he probably was in the effort to tell a good story and put butts in seats, then that would be unfortunate, because he was a real person who created real suffering. But Hollywood isn't in the business of educating people about history and current events. It's about entertaining, and often concessions will be made in regard to showing things as they are. Downfall is a rare exception of a movie that pulls no punches but achieves some commercial success.

i got no problem with films about gangsters thugs killers real or fake problem i have with this guy is he is a liar and the guy who wrote the book went along for the ride .....what pisses me off is he thinks he can manipulate people with his lies and paint himself and others like the ice cream man robert pronge in a cetain mythology.....i am certain he killed people but he aint anything special......and if you read the book he comes across as very special, and finally he gets the movie he wanted, just happy he is not around to milk it

Well my post was not necessarily aimed at you Kara but I do understand what you are saying. If you go back through the majority of negative posts they are largely based on the glorification this guy gets from the making of this film and all I was saying is I think that is bulls__t.

I don't think it is the directors job to make you walk out the cinema thinking whether or not the guy is cool. I think that will be the choice of the viewer. Honestly I am probably going to walk out thinking that was a great movie and Shannon was f____g cool in the role. I seriously have no problem with me thinking like that as I am not ever going to think that a mass murderer is a cool guy. This is a film rightly or wrongly to be enjoyed but I still don't see how that could ever convince somebody to think a mass murderer is cool. I personally think that is more a state of mind. I will never think like that and a film would never hold that power of persuasion over me.

The problem you have Kara is he was a devoted husband and father and that could be the part that makes people grow to like him or certainly as you fear downplays his actions. The film will tell it how the book does I am pretty sure of that but anybody that murders is scum end of story! However I still can't wait for the film :lol

Disappointed to read that only Michael Shannon‘s overpowering screen presence stops The Iceman from being a flop :(

One to miss then...

I wouldn't say that. Seeing Shannon in full terrifying flow will be worth the admission alone bud. I class him as one of the best actors working today.

Just a real shame the movie seems flawed. Alot of character development at the expense of the story apparently :(

This has got me really interested again, after all it's Shannon :rock

With Iceman, you’re playing a real person but there’s always the balance between Hollywood-izing the subject matter versus also telling the real story. I’m curious how you guys found the right line between telling the true story and making a movie.

Shannon: This is very much we’re making a movie. The fact of the matter is the movie is 90 minutes long, or even less than, and the man lived for several decades so the math is against you. I mean, it’s not going to fit, you know? With biopics it’s not enough to just say, “I’m going to tell this person’s life story.” You have to have kind of a thesis. You have to pick an element of the person’s life and think, “This is what I want to present. This is what I want people to ponder or regard.” So we focus very much on the idea of the duality of the character, the double life. In a way it’s almost like a fable more than anything, for me anyway, because I don’t think this movie will make anybody an expert on Richard Kuklinsky if they watch it, but what it might do is make them consider the fact that there are a lot of people in the world that do things to make money that hurt other people. Then they come home and they have a family that they love, they eat dinner with their family, they tuck their kids in and say “I love you”, they say their prayers and go to sleep. And yet when they go out there in the day to do whatever it is they do to make money – it’s hard to find things to do in the world right now to make money where you’re not having some negative effect on somebody somewhere, you know what I mean? If you’re working at a hedge fund, buying up failing companies, forcing people out of work, and shutting things down – there’s a lot of people making money on the misfortune of others, so I thought this is a very exaggerated version of that. It was one of the reasons I found it interesting.
