And how many films did Star Wars rip off?

So a few space movies followed after SW showed promis. So what, happens all to time to anything that makes money.

Hey now--- I never claimed that SW was original... for Pete's sake it's essential ancient myth.. and Lucas has as much said that Kirusawa's Hidden Fortress is reputed to have been the prototype for Star Wars... I merely bring up the fact that many many many sci fi movies that immediately followed SW attempted to cash on its success. Do you disagree?

Mmmmmm... Every sci-fi movie that came out after 1977 and into the mid to late 80's was attempting to capitalize on the explosive (read that $$$$) impact of Star Wars... however, if you're not satisfied with that tiny incapsulation let me dive deeper into the psyche.

TLS (The Last Starfighter)- the main protagonist is a young teenage boy with wondrous abilities that he does not realize make him destined for greater things (the basic mythos character). He is completely ignorant of his potential and needs a wiser character (played by character actor Robert Preston- the last role prior to his death). The character of "Centauri" was a "lovable-con-man"... pretending to be something that he isn't-- some type of hermit one might say. Pulled into a world and fight that would seem insurmountable-- well, not really it's not like has to shoot something that's only about two metres in width-- the hero, with help from his quirky alien pal (Grig) save the day in spectacular fashion... Oh, and just for the tech nuts reading this the Gunstar and other spaceships were the design of artist Ron Cobb, who also worked on Alien, Star Wars and Conan the Barbarian.

Here's the tagline for the '84 film..."He didn't find his dreams . . . his dreams found him." I guess the force was with him.

You're right-- there's nothing even remotely similar between these two films. Maybe except for the fact that Star Wars had a budget of $11,000,000 and the Last Starfighter's budget was $16,000,000--- I can't remember, which made more $$$ and inspired a generation of filmakers not to mention a plethora of copycats?:D

Bit of a stretch. One might argue that you can find that comparision to just about any other film. Not just Sci Fi.

That's because most films of a fictional type (of any type of epic nature) are based on ancient legend or myth... Whether that is the hero's journey in Greek myth or transposed into the Anglo culture through Arthur.

I loved this movie when I was a kid. I still watch it when I catch it.

I hate all of you who saw this when you were kids, I was starting my senior year in high school.

Damn young whipper snappers.

Well I got confused with all you guys saying it was a great 80's movie. Then I realised I havent seen it and was thinking of 'Battle Beyond the Stars'-

Now that was a bad movie!
It even had John Boy Walton in it!

If I remember correctly it was a post Star Wars, low budget Seven Samurai/ Magnificent Seven rip off... and is is sooo bad it goes right round to good, goes past and becomes bad again. And to think I paid to see it!

The score (music) for The Last Starfighter is classic.

I also agree that Krull is another great movie from the 80s that not many people have seen.

Tron also rocks and was WAYYYY before it's time.

Yeah, Tron is another really great movie... would love to see some high-end 1/6 figures from that. Medicom mades some smaller articulated figures so I could see it as a possibility.

I could see hurricane making some cool glowing customs.

Don't forget to add "Enemy Mine" to the list of classic 80's sci-fi. Always liked that one!

Never got into that. 8 year olds or even me at 27 still doesn't get a male having a baby. LOL! Some things a dude just shouldn't do human or not. :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

Enemy Mine is a good one. Not as classic as the others mentioned but still good.

Enemy Mine was great, and I thought a well done take on the governmental war vs individual war theme.

The guy having a baby was odd, but the story worked well together. I still get a bit choked up when Louis Gossett Jr dies... and when they eat the worms :yuck
