The faith in their little green God was not strong enough.

That was the judgment of Werner Herzog, the imperious German filmmaker turned galactic space villain turned Baby Yoda fan club president, when he saw The Mandalorian creator and showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni removing the miniature creature from set during one of his scenes with the being.

They were preparing to shoot a blank slate of the sequence as a backup in case they decided during postproduction that the puppet wasn't convincing enough and a digital version had to be substituted.

Herzog, known for films about pushing the limits of human ability and endurance, could not hide his contempt.

"You are cowards," he declared. "Leave it."

This story, recounted by Filoni during his introduction of The Mandalorian at its Hollywood premiere, got a massive laugh from the audience, in part because HOW COULD ANYONE DOUBT THE POWER OF BABY YODA?

I could see how they'd realize it could have just as easily gone the other way.

If the 30 minutes leading up to the Child reveal hadn't been as well-made as they were, it could have come off as cheesy and hack and cliche and desperate cash grab....which a lot of people apparently felt it was, but the the vast majority loved him.

But the way people seem so determined to only think in extremes these days, I can imagine an alternate world where the Child is as reviled and trashed by everyone as the "Cats" movie was.

"Ew, that thing was creepy"

"Jar Jar levels of CRINGE"

"disgusting uncanny valley on Baby Yoda!"

We just happen to be in living in the dimension where it was a hit.

Luv this. There's other stories about director Chow not being able to pull Herzog away and he was talking to Baby. Impresses me that Herzog thought so much of what Favreau and Filoni were doing. Course Favreau has major *&^% for inviting someone like Herzog along - WH is one of those people that can make u feel very small very fast if he wants.:lol

And re 'net chatter I think Din giving Baby a clan name of Kuiil would be nice, all things considered.

This is the "**** you, Sideshow - I'm gonna **** in your bed and there's nothing you can do about it" post.:lol

One part off for me is the lower lip section. This proto looks like it's about to cry mouthwise.
BTW, is the child he or she?

Yeah, to me it's the color as Hoody said, the eyes being a bit large and that lower lip/mouth area. Still an incredible looking piece though, and WAY more accurate than the SSC regular Yoda full size figure.

Oh man, is this real? I had that as a kid (as I had nearly every Star Wars toy) and used to love it, despite it never actually appearing in the movies.

Instant nostalgia. First Star Wars toy in years I've felt a need to buy.

A similar transport does actually appear in ESB (cruising past Han in this particular shot):
