The internet/youtube response to Brie Larson continues to be out of all proportion to her 'crimes' such that I'm embarrassed at having participated in it back when Captain Marvel came out and her feminist clips were doing the rounds.
That's a fair perspective. But here is a different one as well....
I did not collect Hot Toys The Dark Knight. Nor Hot Toys Iron Man.
But I was happy for collectors who did, because the massive popularity of the lines meant they also got the more arcane type figure releases. Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Blake, etc, etc. Iron Man got many of the lesser core armors made. I did collect Hot Toys Predators back in the day, and it was an insanely popular line. So popular that we got three Lost Predators, two were SDCC exclusives, plus we got a concept art Samurai Predator that was awesome.
When the MCU is successful, very popular and raking in big money, it opens up the chance for the more arcane characters and storylines to get a chance. ( Consider Agents of SHIELD, which netted all Ghost Rider fans an actual new Ghost Rider HT figure) When the MCU is failing, losing fans and losing money, those opportunities dwindle. Are some here really interested in seeing an X Force film? How about a story about the Nova Corps? Captain Britain? What about World War Hulk? The potential there fades with each box office bomb.
I love the first Guardians Of The Galaxy. I also love Thor Ragnarok. And The Punisher tv series with Bernthal. None of that would have happened without the legacy success of Iron Man 1, Captain America TFA, etc, etc. If Phase One carried bomb after bomb like Phase Four, then would we have gotten GOTG1?
The Marvels, from a projection standpoint, is probably going to lose money when it's all said and done. When that happens, it's another nail in the coffin from a future series or film you might actually want to see and hope to get some cool HT 1/6th figures made.
The rise of the DCEU and the investment in it came from copying the success of the MCU. When the MCU fails, it also highlights the risk for DC stuff too. Their DCEU is already in shambles. That also reduces the chance to extend into other stories and characters you might want to see. What about a Batman Brave And The Bold story? Maybe Swamp Thing. Those kind of things die on the vine when total chaos happens.
The failures of Larson, Captain Marvel and possibly The Marvels is also about the future MCU as well.
I don't hate Brie Larson. But I won't deny that this part of the MCU has a clear Brie Larson problem. She's the title character, so this all falls on her shoulders, fair or not. This is part of the deal with being a hopeful movie star.
