Macs are awesome, but I hate how their sales people push their warranties on you. Rule of thumb, if it doesn't break down within the first few months to even a year, you're pretty much good (for a desktop)... they handle fine. My G3 iMac lasted 8 years, no issues. Worst 300 bucks spent ever. Just for piece of mind.
Laptops, I may go the warranty route though. My laptop has a warranty through school, since we're constantly moving them around. Honestly, I would go with a iMac if you don't need to take your computer with you. I have to because I can work at my Mac from home and school.
The Apple Care plan can prove to be worth every penny. I had 2 super drives die on me, but because I had the plan, I got them both replaced 100% free, as well as having a monitor die and be repaired completely on their dime.
It's like insurance, you may spend a lot for nothing, but there may also come a time you tap into it for far more than you put in. I know all the things I got taken care of under the plan cost more than I paid to have the coverage.
I don't recommend getting any serious Apply tech without that plan.
