Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Perhaps. But it's a "damned if you and damned if you don't" situation.

Harry Potter's flicks work somewhat, but fans of the book complained about important parts being left out. And while I still think it's a beyond idiotic desision to make a 300 page book into 3, 3 hour movies, I also know that if they didn't, people would complain about the lack of "tiny little side detail that doesn't matter in the overall plot" being ommited.

But then it ends up being too damn long, and boring in spots.

There is no winning. Maybe Jackson should just make the next two flicks 2 hours long each. Keep em nice and short. Keep them nice and tight. Tell the fans to screw off, and just go with your gut on what will make the story work.

And never ever film anything in 48fps ever again. :lol

Well I think this really shouldn't have been more than 2 hrs 15-20min max

PJ is known for his extended editions - the hardcore fans will always get that so there's no sense in making the theatrical version unnecessarily long

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Of course. Film studios don't give a rats ass if the film's trailer lies to you. As long as you chuck your money into their greedy sticky hands.

Go into every movie, interested, but not expecting something certain. You never know. You might get something a lot more interesting then you thought.

He wanted to bloat it out like the other LOTR flicks. No movie really needs to be 3 hours long. You can tell an effective story in less then two, and maybe even add a bit more for an even MORE effective story.

3 hours pushes it no matter what. There will always be drag points.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I guess as someone who has read The Hobbit several times, Lord of the Rings, The Appendices, and other materials I didn't find any bloat. Jackson actually gives more depth to several thing within this story that isn't in the book. As a fan of the story I love that and I think if some of you read the books you'd see why.

:goodpost: Seeing all the bits of information from decades of writings being brought into one film was fantastic.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The problem is this film is just too bloated for mainstream audiences. I think it would have been much better served (and would have been better received) with a Theatrical cut that is 20-30 minutes shorter.

What would you have cut out? I didn't feel it was too bloated. With all those dwarves, it was bound to happen. I think that since their introduction is out of the way, the other two movies will be tighter.

Two of the most bloated films to me are 2001 Space Odyssey and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Talk about scenes that went on forever! :lol

I agree. Seeing more of the information of Middle-earth come to life is not bloat to me. The information we got from the appendicies gave more depth to the Dwarves as a race, White Council/Dol Guldur helps adds to bringing both stories together. Like I said The Hobbit is a simple book and to make a decent movie these characters need to be fleshed out. The Hobbit would not be a good movie if it was left to be just one film.

Sorry, I disagree with your there. If each LotR film was 2 hours long, too much would've been lost.

One of my favorite parts was the mentioning of the Blue Wizards and speak of the Istari in general. We never got anything of that in LOTR other than the "rods of the five Wizards" quote. And that was ONLY in the extended edition!

So, I'm curious, as I've never read the books. Which parts of the film were from The Appendices?

yeah, that was cool. He had to forget the blue wizards names because they're owned by the Tolkien Estate. :lol

My friend next to me and I had a good laugh at that. Jackson played it so well, while staying legal.

The White Council stuff, the tale Balin tells, the dul guldur stuff (though some has been moved to film 2), etc.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Saw it earlier tonight in 3D.

A great movie that instantly enhances the LOTR trilogy. I felt like I was transported right back to Middle-Earth again. Can't wait for the next one.

So you hated the movie?
I still don't get if you hate the actual movie or not.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

No. I don't think I could love it.

But maybe if I see it in a format that isn't trash, I could love it. It's still LOTR. And while it's more fun, and a lot easier to take in, dwarves and goblins and **** is not my bag.

But this was close.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Thorin hugging Bilbo after the Warg fight surprised me. Was that in the book can't remember?
