Rocker Steve Perry refused to let The Sopranos creator David Chase use his classic song "Don't Stop Believin'" in the mob show's final scene until he knew the fate of the drama's leading characters. The ex-Journey frontman kept Chase waiting until three days before the long-awaited finale aired in America on Sunday. Perry is a huge Sopranos fan and feared his 1981 rock anthem would be remembered as the soundtrack to the death of James Gandolfini's character Tony Soprano - until Chase assured him that wouldn't be the case. Perry says, "The request came in a few weeks ago and it wasn't until Thursday that it got approval, because I was concerned. I was not excited about (the possibility of) the Soprano family being whacked to 'Don't Stop Believin''. Unless I know what happens - and I will swear to secrecy - I can't in good conscience feel good about its use." And Perry was so true to his word, he didn't even tell his family the song featured in the finale. He adds, "I didn't want to blow it. Even my wife didn't know. She looked at me and said, 'You knew that and you didn't tell me?'" IMDB.com

Hmm... So did Chase tell Perry that Tony would not die???

certainly appears so or we wouldn't have had Perry's song in the finale. i'd say this is a pretty good "quasi-official" source for the Tony not dead side.

Neat info -- this is cool how all this is being pieced together like a puzzle. Far better than a nice neat package.

What the FBI Guy said. Confirms my take on it...

One of the show's actors gave a hint at what Chase might have had in mind.

Matt Servitto, who played FBI Special Agent Harris, said Chase briefly kept the camera rolling after what amounted to Tony's final moment on screen - and that the extra footage appeared to clearly spell the end for the supreme Soprano.

"[Tony's daughter] Meadow got into the diner, sat down . . . The menacing 'Members Only' jacket-wearing man at the counter was a little bit more in play, and I think she's sitting there with the family kind of all together . . . and all of a sudden, the menacing man gets up, starts walking toward their booth. End of show," Servitto said.

"The scene cut as the [menacing] guy was advancing toward [Tony], as if he was about to shoot Tony. It was, I think, less ambiguous that Tony was going to get shot."

Chase shot multiple endings so the actors wouldn't how it was really going to end.

It still very subjective as to what the actual ending is.

As for possible alternative endings - think DVD extras - an HBO spokesman insisted none was even scripted, much less filmed.

"We're planning to release [the finale on DVD] in October. There will be no alternative endings on the DVD, because there were none shot," the rep said. "

So, what we got here is an extension of the final scene, the only scene shot.

The door bell rings, Tony looks up (where we left off)

Tony sees Meadow. She joins them at the table, happy family.

Members Only jacket thug eyes Tony, walks straight for him...

Sudden cut to black, followed by silence. Roll credits.

I've read more than once that three endings were shot. I also heard Edie Falco say it in an interview before the episode aired.

A rep could be saying there is no alternate ending so that they never see the light of day. Or the three different endings story could have been made up just to keep people in the dark before the episode.

Whatever the truth is (I doubt we'll find out), I still think the ending is subjective.

I heard at the very least three, and of course that is what DVD's are for --- of course I failed to totally read the posts above mine. :p

The member's chap was also a relative of one of Tony's victims, right; as were a few others there that night.

Not necessarily, Tony not getting killed on camera is a sneaky way around that.

I watched the replay of the ending tonight again and am more convinced that Tony got capped by the guy coming out of the bathroom. If you watch it carefully, you see Tony peek up while looking at the menu and notice the Members Only jacket guy going into the bathroom, so he is aware of his surroundings. However, he gets distracted when the bell on the front door rings as Meadow is coming in and then it cuts abruptly to black. I believe that he gets capped by the guy coming out of the bathroom as he looks up to see Meadow coming in the door since it is such an abrupt ending.

Also, every time Tony heard the bell ring he would look up then you would see from his perception who was coming in the door. However as Meadow was coming in and the bell rang, Tony looked up then the screen went black and silent from his perception (if they were following all the previous set up when Carmella and AJ came in).

Like Chase said, it is all there and he didn't have to explain it. I think it deserves a repeat viewing after the initial shock of "What the hell was that?" wears off.

Not to break any balls here :)lol) but I'm pretty sure that there weren't multiple endings shot. The day after the finale, Steve Van Zandt was interviewed on a local radio station here in D.C. and he said with all seriousness that there was only 1 ending shot, not 3, not 2, but 1. He said those are all just rumors.

He did say though, that even though a movie (which was rumored since the 4th episode of Season 1, btw) has not been discussed, that "who knows, maybe 3 or 4 years down the line, somethin' could happen".

I'm pretty sure it's all there at the end of the finale, and that we won't be getting any alternate endings.
