I was going through a couple trilogies recently, Blade, Indy, X-Men, Spider-Man, and the common theme seems to be a really good origin story, a good (or great) second installment, and then a meh third movie. Not saying that the third movie is terrible, but it just doesn't live up to the standards set by the first movie. Is it even possible by the third movie to not come off, in part, as a bit of a rehash? Other than Indy and Star Wars, I can't think of too many trilogies that had as good a third movie as the first. Thoughts?

Harry Potter 3 was arguably the best in the franchise so far.

But yeah... not a trilogy.... :dunno

All a matter of preference, but I think Return of the Jedi was better than A New Hope.

Terminator 3 gets my vote as one of the weaker 3rds in a series.

Pirates 3 gets my vote for redeeming a series, I thought there was something missing in Dead Man's chest from the first Pirates movie and I thought the feel from the first film was back more in the last one, though I know most people thought it was a tank film and that Pirates went downhill after the first movie.

Ooh, great one! Although I can understand how some people argue that LOTR and Star Wars are more like one movie in 3 acts than three individual movies. But yet, ROTK was everything the previous ones were and more! :eowyn

I didn't want to say anything about ROTJ being better than ANH because I was sure it would ensue a riot, but since you mentioned it, YES! I LOVE ROTJ the most of the Star Wars OT. :lsvader

T3 was fun for what it was, but I don't pop it in every year and watch like I do with T1 and T2. Pirates 3 was a step up from Pirates 2 for sure. I don't think it was quite as good as the first one though...but the first one was an instant classic, so tough act to follow.

Hey, I just thought of another bad one: Robocop 3. How do you go from Robo 1 to Robo 3? Wow. :(

I wouldn't discount the original Star Wars Trilogy. Return of the Jedi should have continued the escalating momentum of the first two... but didn't. It should have been darker than Empire but instead we got Jabba's Muppet Show and Teddy Bear Warriors. :banghead

Like X3, ROTJ is by far the worst of an otherwise strong trilogy.

Strangely enough, Episode III is the strongest entry of the prequel trilogy. Go figure. :duh

To be quite honest, I think that the LOTR trilogy is the most solid trilogy ever produced.

That is true. The first was original, both in character, plot, and pretty much everything about it.

The second really added nothing, plus it was minus barbosa (who helped make the first one).

Honeslty didn't think At world's end was that great, kinda long and boring (especially the pirate council scenes thing......*snore*)

That's cool...to each his own. I loved ROTJ the most though. I thought it was the most fun and most colourful. I know George Lucas likes to keep things positive and he had a real hard time letting them do TESB the way they did, and tried real heard to not make ROTS any darker than it turned out. He seems like he lives for his kids and he's always thinking about them (and other kids) when he makes his movies. I mean he went to see a childen's psychologist to make sure kids would be okay with Luke losing his hand and getting a bionic one. :)

The theme of the son who's totally good and pure redeeming his father who's lost his way and never giving up hope is just so powerful for me. Maybe it's because my father passed away when I was young, I don't know, but that theme always touched me the most of any of the Star Wars movie. I love that scene where Luke unmasks Anakin and you only see love in Anakin's eyes...love that Luke reawakened in him. So beautiful. :crying :lol

Part 2 wasn't exactly up to par with part 1 either.

Yup...I'm still shocked that the director of TESB also made Robocop. So confused...makes no sense! Does that mean Kirsh had no talent and it was all Lucas? Like I said...makes no sense! :lol

I wonder how much he was thinking of the children when he had Anakin go to the Jedi Temple.:lol:lol:lol

I would have to agree with you on RoTJ, never looked at it like that. While we get the dark moments between Luke/Vader/Palp. we get CRAP scenes with ewoks. I wish that lucas' original idea of using wookies would have been used, but it was too hard to pull off back then. Had the non luke/vader/palp. scenes been as dark as those, the movie would have blown everything away, but alas, it didn't.

I thought the scene was handled incredibly well. They cut away before you saw anything happen. Plus it had to be Vader doing the killings. Having the Clones do it wouldn't work. He just wrote himself in a tough situation and handled it as tastefully as he could.

ROTK is one of the best third films ever IMO. POTC 3 is better than 2 but not better than 1. Last Crusade is my favorite of the Original Indy films. SW I'd go with ESB, ROTJ, and ANH in that order.

Yeah, but that is still pretty freaking disturbing having that kid come up to Anakin.

Like I said, it was handled tastlefully. It's not like Anakin raised his lighsaber, screamed and brought it down and we hear a child cry out and then they cut.

And he couldn't just skip the scene completely. It would have totally taken away from the evil that Anakin had become. Just having Obi-Wan watching a hologram that he can see and we can't and go "Oh my...Anakin killed younglings...trust me, I'm seeing it with my own eyes...even though you can't see it...it's happening." I'll take the way the ended up doing it. :lol

But yeah, ROTS is another to add to the list of "The Third One Was The Best." I don't think there's a lot of people who'd say TPM or AOTC were better.

And this coming from a guy who wants Greedo to shoot first. :google :google :google

Surely the darkest moment in the entire saga. Some would consider Anakin's act in the temple would leave him unredeemable.

I still would have liked to have anakin pull his lightsaber against the little kids....then the camera slowly backing away from him, then the door closing, then you hear the sounds of kids screaming/lightsaber swinging....I know that's cold, but would have made that evil seen MUCH more emotional
