Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

Just watched all 6 episodes, very cool show, looking forward to season 2.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

WTF. I just caught up on my reading of season 2's production. Are they really considering running this season without a staff of writers? I read about budget cuts and such which will obviously hurt, but without writers?

Irish you got the scoop on this?

There were rumors last year that the entire writing staff was let go after season 1, but I thought those rumors were denied by everyone involved.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

I always assumed that the rumors around cutting the writing staff were true but i never did understand why. I really liked the first season and felt like if nothing was broke why try and fix it. The only way i could figure it made any sense was to assume they were doing it to make way for bigger name guest writers hoping to add fresh ideas and more creative twists to next season. In short to throw more money at it...

If it really has to do with "budget cuts" then i think it makes even less sense. Based solely on the success of the first 6 episodes i cant figure out why they wouldn't be willing to throw every dime they have at the project. I mean I'm glad they say that creativity supposedly is not suffering but i would really hate to see them be wrong opening day. Given i am not in the TV business but there has been a lot more money wasted on a lot dumber ideas. The formula has been tried and proven already so where is the risk?

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

This article was posted yesterday about budget cuts but I haven't watched the video on the link to see if it is expanded upon.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/walking-dead-producer-frank-darabont-193454

The creative forces behind some of TV’s top series are lamenting the increased budget pressure they are under these days. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s annual drama showrunner Emmy roundtable, Walking Dead writer-producer Frank Darabont specifically addressed the budget on his hit AMC zombie drama, which he says is in jeopardy of being cut.

“Creatively I have no complaints thus far,” Darabont says. “But I believe if they do move ahead with what they’re talking about, it will affect the show creatively ... in a negative way. Which just strikes me as odd. If you have an asset, why would you punish it?”

Darabont wasn’t alone in expressing his concerns with budget pressure. Terence Winter, writer-producer of HBO’s Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire, detailed his back-and-forth with the network heading into Season 2 of the series.

“Looking at some of the proposed cuts – the wishlist for the budget, I had to remind people the show is called Boardwalk Empire and we can’t afford a boardwalk or an empire for that price,” Winter says.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

Watching the video, there's nothing there about writers. I didn't watch the whole hour, but the section around 'budget cuts' sounds more like a reduced budget overall. There's nothing there about cutting writers.

If I were guessing, I'd assume it's more about sets and effects at this point - I noticed a comment at the end of the story to the effect that why would they need that much budget if they stuck with the comic, but I'd say there's a LOT of extremely expensive scenes in the comic, including several locations. I'm thinking of one location in particular that the non-comic readers might think isn't as crucial as Kirkman and Darabont (and most of us) would.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

Yeah the whole cutting the writers was news that broke a few months back with hopes of bringing in new fresh ideas as Darksider stated. I just read about this recently and its just sad to see a show do so well and now in a sense they take instead of give. The show earned its slot and to take away from the budget lets just hope it doesnt hurt the show to much. I would hate to have such a great first season only to have the 2nd season were waiting on be complete garbage.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

What TV executives really want is for the creative team to produce the same product for less money and increase profit margins...

I understand TV is a business, but i also know you have to spend money to make money. I don't think the success of 6 great episodes will be enough to carry fans through 13 crappy ones. Then what do you do? Come up with something else that will keep viewers entertained for 1.5 seasons? They have a good idea here, give the creative teams whatever they need to make it perfect get some huge corporate sponsors on board (advertising) and laugh all the way to the bank 8 years from now.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

I just can't understand how these networks can start these shows, then when they come sucessful, claim that they can't afford them any longer. It happens quite a bit on HBO. They they just go and start another one and then, once again, claim it's just too expensive to produce and cancel it. Either someone doesn't do their homework, or they don't want to share the profits with the cast and other staff of the show, and start another one with "season one pay". If that makes sense.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

TWD is heading down the same road as Deadwood I'm afraid. It's crazy. TWD is a massive, rousing success but once the beancounters start cutting a little here or a little there, the series will start to suffer. And we are definitely going to see this come the second season. Greed and stupidity will kill anything no matter how good or successful.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

I'm almost to the point where I just won't invest my time, or heart, into a series like this. It's different with a series who has a story that ends in an hour, but these kinds of series just seem to STOP anymore and you're left empty or, pissed off!

Yeah, they canceled The Sarah Connor Chronicles right when it hit its stride and I can see this ending just as abruptly as well. :(
