Well said special guest.

I am dying to see this movie again, I can't wait for the home viewings.

I have no reservations calling this movie a masterpiece.

Yep... I am in the masterpiece line of thinking now also :)

That's because somewhere along the line, horror resorted to appealing to the lowest common denominator, Saw, Hostel, Paranormal Activity, I'm looking at you. Then those movies became what everyone identified Horror as, the standard, instead of the worst examples.

Horror goes through it's stages and changes...

2000's was about ghosts and torture
1990's was a lot of Scream type teen/comedy/slasher films
1980's was owned by slasher films
1970's seemed to be owned by Satan
1960's Resurgence of Gothic horror
1950's Science had run amok

Etc.. ect.. ect..

The films you mentioned all have their value. Paranormal Activity had it's moments.. Sequels ruined that film.. Hostel IMO is a very good horror films with winks and nods towards great horror films like The Wicker Man, An American Werewolf, Audition, ect.. And I like some of the Saw films... Horror is always changing..

The Witch regardless of when it was made (except the 70's maybe would have gotten this love hate relationship with it.

Yeah, Hostel 1 has its place in the long history of "horror".

As does Cannibal Campout. :lol

The Witch made me want to go watch Race with the Devil and The Car. :lol

IMO art house horror films are the only horror movies doing something different right now. However James Wan is killing it with the The Conjuring series. Now that's jump scare done right. [emoji106]

If you haven't seen this short film, please watch it now. It's fantastic. It's called Lights Out. It's creepy as ****. It's actually being made into a feature-length film. I believe it comes out this July. James Wan is also producing it. Supposedly it's going to be very good, as the studio is bravely releasing it against a lot of blockbusters during that month. So we'll see. I absolutely loved the short film!

Liked that little video...

Personally I am not a fan of James Wan's ghosty flicks... Well I like about half of each of them. I thought Insidious had a great first half and then fell apart in the second half. The Conjuring had some moments but again it fell apart halfway through. Did he two Insidious 2?? That was awful. Anyways what seems to creep him out does not bother me ie.. Dolls, smiling clown looking ghost, jump scares.... He always tends to show too much.

But moments like the ghost in the dark corner in the original conjuring were you can see nothing you just have the girl saying something is there.. That is good stuff IMO.. So there is a great ghost movie in waiting to get out In James Wan's brain somewhere.

I thought Hostel was great and left me uneasy through most of the film. That whole "everybody is in on it but you" style always gets under my skin. It gets a rep as torture porn but there is hardly any blood. I thought the sequel was unneeded but did as much as it could do with the type of subject manner it's dealing with.. I liked that it showed the other side of the situation (the killers) and how they do what they do. Not perfect but not as bad as some make it out to be.

Saw 1 is another good one IMO and hold up to repeat viewing easily. I actually find the first three to be a very good trilogy and probably should have ended there. However 2 Halloweens ago I watched them all over a weeks and fund them all to be enjoyable... Don't get me wrong they are far from classics but its a fun horror soap opera :)

I have stated it before.. As far as better modern day horror I think the With is tops right now.. Others that I liked a lot are Krampus, Sinister, and Oculus.

The first Insidious was great. And yeah, I loved that door scene in the first Conjuring. It's what you don't see that can sometimes be scariest aspect of a horror movie.

Yup, Conjuring and Insidious fell apart halfway thru big time, but so did Sinister for me.

The Witch didn't fall apart at all! :rock

Yup, Hostel had good villains, made me scared to visit eastern europe. :lol

Not as bloody as the reputation it has for that.

Good call on The Car... I seem to return to watch that movie every 3 years or so.

Honk!! Honk!! hon hon hon hon hon Honk!!!

Race with the Devil also has that "everybody is in on it" vibe, not the best of movie but still has a great opening and ****ed up ending.

honk honk!

I have not seen Race with the Devil in probably 15 years... I have seen it a few times but it seems like my last viewing did do much for me. Perhaps it's time to revisit.

Sinister fell apart for you huh?? I thought that film stayed eerie and dreadful throughout. It has even held up to repeat viewings for me.

You know what other horror film I liked that nobody else does? Case 39... I don't know if it's because I worked in the same field as the main character in this film or what but I really got into that one and enjoyed both viewings.. But I seem to be in the minority on that one.

Crap, you just made me order Race. :lol

Yeah, it might not hold up, but the Satanist were creepy. :lol

I loved Sinister up until the ghost kids showed up, then it went downhill from there. What a huge crash landing that was. :(

I think first time viewing they might have take me out a little bit. But I did like the Slow motion scene they did with them... But it's not like they really do anything in it to take away from the rest of the film. You should give it another shot.

As for Race with the Devil. Fingers crossed on some good Satanic fun :)

Only thing I don't like about Horror Films is hopeless endings, if I watch people go through hell then I want to see them come out of it a fighter even if they are worse for the wear. Berserk comes to mind.

Well finally got in my 2nd viewing today, this time with the wife.

It held up just fine for me but the wife said it was just ok.

I still found it to be haunting as all hell.

Minor nitpick:

I'm starting to think if it would've been better had they not showed the pretty witch when the boy was seduced, maybe only showing her feet and leg coming out the door while the rest of her stayed hidden in the darkness.

I have no problem with how the director did it, but your way would have worked too. I guess by baring her leg, we would have gotten the impression the Witch was attempting to seduce him. But then (until the end at least) our only view of The Witch would have been in her hag form, and I wonder if it that would have led more viewers to presume there was
more than one Witch, which was the big reveal at the end.
