I knew it without even knowing it. They're so predictable. :monkey3

:google :panic:

It really was a lose/lose situation for the daughter though.

Not only was she upset about leaving the comfort of the commonwealth but I think she knew that by being isolated with her family she would be subjected to an even more strict version of their religion which I think pushed her further into doubt and confusion over her faith, which obviously opened her up to intrusion from the devil.

Her brother having incestuous thoughts certainly didn't help his case any. :lol

:lol Yeah, but Thomasin seemed kind of oblivious to that. It was kept between Caleb and the audience, which was good structure and made it even creepier.

I was actually surprised that in the woods
The seductive Witch didn't present herself as his Sister
but that might have been confusing for the audience.

It depends on how you look at it. To me the movie was a "war of souls" and we were shown an alternative:

Caleb. He pretty much got equal screen time as his sister in the beginning. And while he was the more "external" sinner (wandering eyes, lying about apples) compared to his sinner, he was also the one more protective of his own salvation as evidenced by how he grilled his dad on whether or not the baby went to heaven. When the witch in the forest presented herself to him he approached her externally but clearly wasn't into it internally. So she chewed him up and spat him back out so to speak. He still died but got to live in heaven forever.

Thomasin on the other hand, seemed more "pure" externally but when push came to shove internally was actually the one with the shakier resolve. When evil presented itself to HER she gave herself completely to it. The elegance of the movie is that it was still all so organic and believable. Even now people are pretty upfront with saying that they "understood" her choice. But there was an alternative, her brother took it, and she did not which makes it quite tragic.

I don't think that the witch could have done that. I assumed that was just her real human form that she reverted to when she was young and that she couldn't assume a different appearance
other than a rabbit or whatever.

I have to admit, considering the alternative and how drab her life was to begin with, I don't blame her for
Taking the Devils offer
she was already beaten and broken down and I get he feeling that she questioned her faith moreso than any of the other characters.

Yep, you sympathize (and even almost empathize) with her to the point where you're crushed by what she does but can't condemn her for it. On an utterly bizarre somewhat side note the movie can't help but make you wonder if you should also be:

feeling a pang of sadness at all those gnarly child murdering hags dancing around the fire. Now that we've seen an example of how Satan recruits them who knows how "good" they might have all been originally.

And that's just crazy to even be wondering given how vile they all were.

Quite possibly.

She was quite beautiful in her youth, but To quote Ash from AOD, "Honey, you got real ugly"

True good point.

At one time though I thought she was going to grab his hand at the river and place it on her boob and be like..."what..its ok, nothing too fear it's natural". :horror

I'm happy that they didn't do that though because it would've been too on the nose that she had some evil promiscuous tendencies in her already.

You know, the money that Deadpool and Conjuring make should really go to movies like Dredd and Witch. :gah:

I believe this was a moderate success for A24 so even though the director said he's out no more, i'm sure A24 will make a crappy sequel or even worse a prequel. :lol

I'm glad Egger won't be on board for any more. It will just make it that much easier to compartmentalize in the event that A24 releases some crappy follow-ups. That being said if it gets nominated for a ton of awards then that could make the studio shy away from sequels. Other than The Godfather, Rocky, Star Wars, and FOTR I can't think of any examples of Best Picture Nominees getting sequels. Literally one series (LOTR) since the 70's.

EDIT: The Exorcist wasn't nominated for Best Picture? That's pretty shocking actually.

And then Vanilla Phillip will be all "Go Raven, go Raven, go Raven, go! Go Raven, go Raven, go Raven, go!"

He'll make a movie within a movie called "Delicious as Ice." :lol

Silence of the Lambs, it got both a sequel and a prequel. Though Red Dragon existed in book form before Silence became a movie.

If this movie is lucky enough to be nominated for a best pic Oscar, that's something it would share with Silence of the Lambs, both movies were released in February. A huge feat for SOTL, considering most Movies that get awarded Oscars are released in November, Silence had to go the entire year and still stayed fresh in voters memories.

Yo, VIP, let's kick it!

Satan Satan Baby, Satan Satan Baby

All right stop, Collaborate and listen
Black Phillip is back with a brand new soul
Deadly, when I play a dope children's melody
Anything less than the best virgin is a felony
Check out the hoofs while my DJ revolves it

Rollin' in my 5.0 cart
With my ragtop down so my horns can blow
The girlies on standby, waving just to say, "Hi!"
Did you stop? No, I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and I'm heading to the next block
That block was dead Yo
So I continued to A1A Puritan farm.

Weird Al would be proud.

I could see the subject matter disqualifying it from consideration which would be too bad. The Crucible got some respect in 1996 but it had the mighty Daniel Day Lewis on its side and was obviously more of a courtroom drama than flat out horror/ghost story.

Yo, VIP, let's kick it!

I rarely ever listen to commentaries on DVDs and Blu's, but this an exception, I am looking forward to the video release because I'm eager to hear what the Director has to say about this film.
