I guess people that collect those. . .fantasize about cartoon characters and stuff? I know people get off on all kinds of things, but there seems to be a real sub-culture of people who are into those things, which is weird. Where does the interest come from? Do they dream about a future in which cartoon characters can interact with humans like Jessica Rabbit?

Honestly, I don't want to know. It is all very disconcerting to me :monkey4

To them I would ask, "It's a sculpture of an underage girl unzipping her top. What's the appeal?" I don't mind going out on a limb and stating that anyone who collects that crap is sick and should really, really be profiled and flagged for a potential risk of sexual predation with minors.

Pedophiles? :huh I think the FBI and CPS should track everyone who purchases crap like that. :lol

I was expecting something WAY worse than that when I clicked the link. You should see some of the stuff I saw at Tokyo toy shops. :horror

That said, I hope you're kidding about profiling people for buying something like that. I'm kind of shocked by a lot of the horror merchandise that people have, but I don't think that they are potential axe murderers.

Yeah, I don't think being into cartoons means that people are also potential pedophiles. I personally don't know anyone who is into that stuff (so I have no point of reference for the kind of people who collect that), but I just don't feel the logical connection. I did read somewhere that there is actual "cartoon porn" in Japan, which is just beyond my ability to comprehend.

But to kind of prove the point about the pedophile thing, I saw this earlier at the Minimate Multiverse. I won't provide a direct link, because then I would feel dirty. Please do not click if you have sensitive dispositions :) :( :

Are you serious?! :google I think it'd be an excellent way to mark potential pedophiles. Would you let someone with statues like that all over their home watch your daughter?! Psychologists have proven that the part of the brain that is stimulated by "horror" is the same part that's stimulated by "comedy." But the libido which responds to sexual stimulus beit visual, physical, etc., is located in a different part of the brain than this.

But let's be honest, even still, having a figure of Leatherface with a pale full of heads is CONSIDERABLY different than owning a statuette portraying a very young girl trying to be sexy and unzipping her shirt. Hell, even having statues of Playboy Models, etc., is different. One is socially and morally acceptable by our (and most other civilized) cultural standards. One is not. Paul Ruben has pictures of very young and naked boys in compromising positions, hanging on the walls of his house. He claims it's art. You might too, I dunno. Again I ask...

What's the appeal?

Whatever it is, and I certainly don't get it, people can be creepy and yet not be pedophiles, can't they? Until you can provide an empirical link between interest for cartoon characters and interest for children, I won't buy it.

Just saw this on Ebay, by the way:

:yuck

--edit: the "young girl" part of your argument is potentially problematic, though. I don't honestly know how old those characters are supposed to be, but interest in underaged cartoon characters would be even more disturbing to me than the general sexual interest in cartoon characters, because it would seem to suggest an interest in something wholly inappropriate--

That's exactly my point. The subject depicted in that sculpt was intended to look as young as she appears. Whether the depicted character is or isn't of age (which I strongly doubt she is considering most of the pieces in that type of anime are underage schoolgirls), it's still questionable subject matter. I really don't see the difference or the defining line between that statue and looking at an image on the internet of an underage girl matching the pose. What's the stimulus that would make one want to buy said statue? What would make one need it and want to look at it? And is it the same stimulus that makes others look at child pornography? I believe it is. The only difference is one is taken to a further extent than the other.

Would a man attracted to a grown woman dressed up seductively as a cheerleader be considered a potential pedophile?

There's still a moral aspect in that "role-play" scenario: The woman dressed as the cheerleader IS morally acceptable. Hence the bolded part of your post. Moreso, I guess it would depend on the man's mental state. Is he aroused because he's imagining screwing little girls? Or is he somehow recapturing his youth? In any case, the object being oogled in your scenario is a grown woman, not a little girl.

Here's a good WTF???!!!!

Gwen Stefani????
These Buffy figures WTF???!!!:pow:huh:slap

Well, then it seems your argument hinges on the cartoon looking like an under-aged girl, then, and I don't disagree that being into cartoon children is very unsettling. Again, I can't speak for those who are into these things (I wish someone who did like this stuff might come and help us to understand), but I would argue that being into a cartoon character for sexual reasons, as strange and disturbing as it may be, is not akin to being a pedophile, and has no relationship with such. This may hold even if the cartoon character is dressed up like a "school girl," or some such thing. Look at the cleavage on some of those toys! Those clearly are not meant to be children. As such, I don't think that liking them has anything to do with the potential of the person liking them to be into actual under-aged children.

What would make me think otherwise is if research were done correlating those convicted of pedophilia with a propensity for collecting scantily clad cartoon characters.

WHATEVER the case, I think we can both agree that collecting these things begs the question: WTF?

I'm not saying that someone who gets off on anime porn is a pedophile (though I also find it disturbing but eh, people screw sheep :lol). It's when the subject matter is that of underage girls is where it crosses the line. Regardless of busts and bra sizes, they're still depictions of young, underage girls and henceforth, would make the viewer a questionable pedophile.

But it should be more of a WTF are you buying this figure for?!

Ever see a figure -- like the Michael Jackson 1/6th for example -- and ask yourself... WTF? Why are they doing that?

There's alot of custom requests too that make me go "WTF". But it's all a matter of taste, right? That's kind of what makes it funny; I'm sure we all have some ideas for figures we'd love to have that someone else would go... WTF Dude?

There's someone for everyone, so there's someone for every figure... but I'm curious what you guys think would make a great WTF Figure?

And so it begins...

:D

Chris Howes' Hugh Laurie sculpt will help make a great WTF doctor house. But having such a main stream TV icon might help 'normalize' my collection to the ungeeked eye:lol

All Chewbacca figures pretty much look like crap, it seems. That's actually better than most.

As for the anime figures, I just think you have to be careful about making sweeping generalizations about things like that. I don't happen to like that kind of thing, but it's not unusual at all in Japan, and I don't think for one minute that the majority of people buying them are pedophiles. For one thing, the anime style makes everyone look like children.

There are people who would say that someone who collects firearms should be profiled, but I don't agree with that either.

I want David Lynch Dune figures!!

I know a lot of people hate the movie, and they look at the LJN figures and think WTF?! But I love the designs.

I tried to make Baron Harkonnen happen, but got stumped by the flightsuit/long underwear thing...
