Here, let me clarify it again.......

You can't get diabetes just by eating a lot of sugar, but if you eat a lot of sugar and you put on a lot of weight, then your chances of getting it go up.

Do you really mean "can't"?

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my 2nd. I think I got it because I would make and eat hot fudge instead of eating breakfast and lunch. Really smart when you're pregnant. And I'm a smaller person -5'2" and 112 lbs (right now).

The recipe for the hot fudge is something I F#$%ing love:

Put creamy peanut butter in a sauce pan (I use Skippy)
add water and Nestle Quick.
Cook it over low heat
Keep adding water and Quick until it turns out how you want it

I never measure, so I don't really know the quantities of each thing. It's the hot fudge I grew up with.

YUM

There are a couple of people that I work with that have diabetes and they are not overweight at all.

I have gained a little weight due to me not working out regularly, but I am 6'2 and my weight is 220lbs. I am 33yrs. old and I really don't think my soda drinking problem has really effected me. :)

This seems to make the point you are making:

To answer your question, eating a lot of sugar technically may cause diabetes mellitus. However, it is indirect. The people who develop Diabetes Mellitus tend to happen in obese individuals who suffer from something call metabolic syndrome. There are many theories of why this happens but that goes beyond the scope of this short answer.

Bottom line, if you are obese or overweight, constantly continuing to eat a lot sugar can eventually lead to diabetes along with eating a lot fat. Moderation is the best way to go, and, of course, exercise.

I still question it though as not all people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight...
