Just your department? Unions are great when you're in a good one. I'm not. :monkey4

Were going to try and get one going since one of the unions here who we share raises with got a 11% raise and we got nothing. It's an ongoing thing where we should be sharing raises with other departments and we never do. We haven't had a cost of living adjustment in 9 years. Not to mention our increment raises are pathetic every year, and only really make a difference on every 5th year since you get a bit more.

When you hit top rate, you can only get increments (I'm not top rate yet though, but fairly close) So if were union (a good one hopefully) we can get a nice healthy bump every year or so. It may not even happen since I think we need to take it to city counsel and it's up to them. We wouldn't go through with it if it's not worth it.

My fiance is in a union and it sucks balls.

Oz has possibly the highest unionised workforce in the English-speaking world - but it ain't compulsory. It used to be until new IR policy was introduced in the 90s that allowed workers to negotiate their conditions directly with employers. Unions freaked out at the decline in membership and adapted - they made themselves attractive to employees by positioning themselves as strong negotiators. Membership started to recover. Very American :lol

Market driven unions??? The humanity!!! :lol

There are states here that have attempted to change conditions so that non-unionized employees are less 'compelled' to participate. They call it 'right to work'. Ironic, since the entire premise of unions here is that you can't exercise your right to work unless you pay someone to represent you and strongarm employers on your behalf. Nonetheless, sufficient laborers in unionized fields have determined that the brotherhood does not have their best interests at heart and that membership is something they have to accept or walk. Right to work laws have made some progress, but wherever they do, a certain demographic gets unruly.
