That's nuts. I think it helped in Oz that there were a couple of high-profile union actions and revelations a while back that really put the public off-side, links to organised crime and industrail inefficiencies being a big part of it. When the government broke up the union monopolies there was broad support in the electorate.

Why pay the fees if they're no good?

The fees are taken out of my check before I even get it. You know going into the job that there is a union. Trouble with mine is, amongst other things, is that my fees are based on an average of ALL union employees in our union make. Now, someone from LA or Chicago make a crap load more than we do here, but we have to pay the same amount of fees as they do.

Trouble is, without the union, I'd be making minimum wage. I'm already making less that people who were hired in after I was and doing the same job.

Were going to try and get one going since one of the unions here who we share raises with got a 11% raise and we got nothing. It's an ongoing thing where we should be sharing raises with other departments and we never do. We haven't had a cost of living adjustment in 9 years. Not to mention our increment raises are pathetic every year, and only really make a difference on every 5th year since you get a bit more.

When you hit top rate, you can only get increments (I'm not top rate yet though, but fairly close) So if were union (a good one hopefully) we can get a nice healthy bump every year or so. It may not even happen since I think we need to take it to city counsel and it's up to them. We wouldn't go through with it if it's not worth it.

My fiance is in a union and it sucks balls.

We don't get cost of living raises at all. We have some step raises, but ours is a mess. Long story.

Market driven unions??? The humanity!!! :lol

There are states here that have attempted to change conditions so that non-unionized employees are less 'compelled' to participate. They call it 'right to work'. Ironic, since the entire premise of unions here is that you can't exercise your right to work unless you pay someone to represent you and strongarm employers on your behalf. Nonetheless, sufficient laborers in unionized fields have determined that the brotherhood does not have their best interests at heart and that membership is something they have to accept or walk. Right to work laws have made some progress, but wherever they do, a certain demographic gets unruly.

Right to work is a joke too. Most of the time it's used just to pay the workers less.

And this is why I hate this city. It seems like we got way more in the wagon than the people that pull it. And we'll never get another cost of living adjustment since the welfare queens keep voting back in the same corrupt asshats every election.

My state votes in different governors all the time, but for some reason they'll never touch welfare. Our state has more goodies than most so a lot of people move here from other states just to get them. All you need is a kid and you're entitled.

I always get a turkey leg at the fair. One "fair food" I've never bought: funnel cake. I've had it before and thought it was ok but not good enough to spend money on again.
