I think we all had a "huge collection" of something that became worthless.

There's always a few pieces that hold value, but 98% becomes junk. Particularly stuff everyone collects.

..and the stuff that wasn't collected that much is rarer now and worth far more(sometimes)
All my Playmates Star trek figures from the '90s I bought in hordes (8 Trois, etc) all junk now- at the time- when they came out folks were paying $25-50 each for some ( on the pictureless primitive internet) So I figured I will horde them and in twenty years they gotta be worth five times that!:lol

Same with Episode 1 figures- I didn't learn my lesson.

Yeah HT will fizzle out eventually and I believe they have lost value in the last two years(except for a few)

Yeah, keep telling yourself that.

I did the same thing with Star Wars 3inch figures in the 90's when there used to be monthly magazines touting their value. All that **** is worthless now.

Same thing will happen with Legos. Sell 'em now while you can and people care. At some point, the luster wears off and so many people collected the dumb ass stuff that there's no where to sell them.

Not so, Lego will be always wanted by kids all over, they been around close to 80 years already, Especially star wars, actually anything limited from them goes up in price. Try getting their star wars sets from the last decade specially the limited edition sets which range from 1-2000.

In perspective when you want to sell toys for example hot toys solely, your business won't survive unless you branch out to other popular brands to survive, but i can tell you right now you will not have that problem with Lego.

80 years and a nominal toy at best for most of that time until they bought into movie franchises in what, the last 15 years? And you said it, most of their value is Star Wars based -- so not lego perse but Star Wars is the value. At some point, Star Wars will tire. Nothing lasts forever.

I can't argue about an event that hasn't happened yet, just mark my words. I've been around long enough to see this kind of thing repeat itself many times over. So too has many other posters here if you don't believe me.

I dont think lego will become worthless because there are too many hardcore fans and collectors

I have a few worthless collections, like bubble gum cards, sport team coins etc, although I'm sure to the right person a few of my "toys" would be worth something if mint and unused. But who the hell buys an original G1 Optimus Prime for a child and leaves it boxed it in a dark cupboard?

I found out with my mother's recent passing that even all those stamps her, I and a family friend spent hours collecting, going to stamp clubs, dealers and the like during the 80s really at the end of the day aren't worth that much. (A few individual stamps here and there might be worth a little money).

One little "investment" that became a bit trendy for collectors years ago I remember was Phone Cards. I don't know how big a thing it was in other countries, but for a few years there coin phoneboxes transitioned over to phonecard phoneboxes. Originally in NZ they released simple currency sets, but it soon became apparant that they could market them like stamps and have multiple sets a year. Some which happened to be fairly limited numbers. Now with the rise of portable phones.. worthless... nobody cares..

So nope, I would never put any "investment" value into any hobby. That's what property and the market are for.

Damn I remember I was going to invest in hot toys and start a business. I was going to sell high end collectibles but now I saw other sellers I got discouraged. They said I'm better off investing in gold.

No BS i actually contacted side show about opening a Hot Toys store similar to Secret base, but like you guys found out, they straight up told me It would not work because you cant survive on Hot toys to save the business since they barely release figures and with delays its not bankable, thats when they said I would be better off opening a toy store with different brands and distributors such as a blu fin to make it work. That idea got shot down real quick and I was crushed. The only ones who make a killing off this are from Hong Kong

Man, good guy Sideshow giving biz advice.

I give up. Buy 'em, buy 'em all. The **** do I care. :lol

But they won't be worth as much as you think by the time you turn 21.

Some toys are eternal. Old barbies still sell for a lot.

Im not saying every single lego will be worth thousands
But some will always be

As far as worthless collections go, I never buy anything for the sole purpose of selling it to retire. I collect what I like/love and that's all that matters to me. If something from my collection is worth $1,000 in 2017 but is only worth a penny in 2057, it doesn't matter to me.

This is why many girls give up their life of collecting hot toys and go into the life of prostitution, wider legs = wider profit margins.

Same for the human slavery trafficking cartels, much better returns selling a real slave Leia than a toy slave Leia.
