I can't see it being anything more than an illusion.
If Loki is going to be useful in this joint quest all he's got is illusion and guile.
He'll want revenge for what Malekith does while visiting Odins palace.
The final battle between Malkith and Thor shows his hammer hand enact.

That looks dumb as hell.
Would also negate two of the coolest things about mjolnir: the hammer twirling, and the ability to call the hammer back to his hand.
