Ok, the video clip brings up something that's really nagging me about Raiders and maybe there is no answer, but her goes.
If the Ark of the Covenant is suppose to have housed the 10 Commandments and be this holy artifact, why does it melt people's faces and incinerate anyone looking at it and all that? What is it that's unleashed when they open it?

According to what I know only the jewish preiests where allowed to even touch it. So it was only those worthy of the knowledge in it that where allowed to have a part with it. Not even Moses or his brother where allowed to do anything with it except for one day a year.
So going off that the Nazi's not exactly being pure of heart where taken out because of their deeds.

I always interpretted it as it depends on what you are hoping to find. the Nazi's were after material posessions, wealth, a new weapon, etc. and were punished for it.
Maybe if someone truely deserving would have a different experience.

I just thought it was the smelly 2500 year old manna that did it.
Makes sense, just seemed very evil and demonic to be a gesture of God or whatever, you know, kill them all sure, but some floating woman that turns to a skull face seems more Devil than God.

I saw that movie with my father when I was maybe 10 or 12. That particular scene gave me nightmares for several days later.

The Ark supposedly had mystical powers which is why it was kept in the Holy of Holies where only the high priests could enter. I believe the Jews actually took it into battle once, and it was captured, but it caused the opposing army so much grief that they put it on an ox pulled cart and sent it on it's way.
