Did you guys know that Sideshow is pretty much the only major collectibles manufacturer that doesn't have an employee at their production factories full-time?

When you let that sink it, it's really not that hard to figure out everything else.

do you have any idea how much that would cost them?

Why pay an american, when someone in some poor area of the world will work for a smile and a bread crumb.

i know i'm being a jerk for saying it that way.. but really.. it's pure and simple economics. They just don't give enough of a crap to lose the money.
They already had the new bodies made for the hobbits, which was supposed to be soooo hard for them to have developed.. and did they finish merry and pippin? Hell no. Instead, they just dropped the line on its butt. Does that suck? yes. But do i blame them from a financial point of view? Not really.
Because i expect GREAT companies to stick with the fans and finish lines and keep quality high.
Sideshow is a good company. not great.
They mass produce, and skimp on certain things. Not that i have a problem with that. But my expectations are adjusted accordingly.

Truth is, it's our fault. We whined about the increase from $50 a figure to $70-$80 a figure, about paying $90 for Indy in German Disguise. If that figure was produced state-side, with Sideshow paying American wages for it's production, importing, insurance rates, etc, I'd hate to think of what they would be charging.

What was the point? That confirms they do have a presence in China.

Or are you saying they need one in EACH factory?

Did you guys know that Sideshow is pretty much the only major collectibles manufacturer that doesn't have an employee at their production factories full-time?
I never said that they're never in China. Klauder and others travel over there a few times a year, but clearly things fall between the cracks because there is not a consistent PM presence in the main production facilities. They can even be Chinese nationals, but someone with accountability that is a direct employee of SSC needs to oversee the hands-on production and packaging over there ALL THE TIME, not 6-8 times a year. This is Project/Product Management 101, people. Heck, it might even work better if the on-site managers and QC people are Chinese, because they'll be able to better communicate to the rest of the factory resources.

And many other companies do... and a lot of them use the very same factories.

The excuse SOD seems to use in that post is that SSC produces more mixed media products than other comparable companies. And while that may or may not be true, I don't see how it relates to not having the consistent PM presence at the factories that is quite standard with large-size toys/collectibles companies.

In other words, Sideshow is probably too big now for essentially the same business model that worked when it was run by 3 guys in a garage.

Well, I'd just like to say, I still have this fella on Pre-Order, and I cant wait for the Ark...even if its inaccurate. Go Toht! :rock

yup.. I am still excited over this one.. and while yes, I do get somewhat disappointed with paint apps or lack of detail in some pieces.. to me that is the fun of this hobby.. taking it out of the box and giving it a good work over... I think if they just came out of the box perfect I would have quickly become bored with collecting... BUT.. that is just me..
