I loved this movie.

It obviously took the TFA approach to sequels but they nailed it. I thought it was "good" up until about the halfway mark but man the Iceman scene really hit me in the heartstrings and from that point on I thought the film was on a whole other level.

The original film is as iconic as they come with literally every aspect (the cast, soundtrack, score, cinematography, one-liners, action, etc.) being iconic in and of itself but Maverick was an absolutely unexpectedly worthy sequel in the tradition of BR 2049. SO much better than Ghostbusters Afterlife which I found to be decent but highly forgettable.

Amazing that the original Road Warrior/Thunderdome, Blade Runner, Ghostbusters, and Top Gun all came out within a few years of each other and each one got super delayed sequels over 30 years later but Maverick was the sole sequel that actually kept the main character from the original as the main character in the new one so kudos to the studio for having faith in Tom and kudos to Tom for pulling it off. In fact I'm not sure that this particular story would have even worked as well if they did make this film 10-20 years ago. We needed to see Tom age for the role and that hasn't even begun to happen until just the last couple years, lol.

Boy does it highlight what a miss it was for Miller to recast Max.

On a side note it was a real treat to see this movie with my kids including my 12 year old son considering I was 12 in 86 when the original came out.

Even if the original never existed…Cruise is such a vet in the business , this would’ve still been a good flick .

He really still knows how to make a film he invested so much in

Absolutely loved it...a real masterclass in how to do legacy content.
I would have been more comfortable with an all-female squadron taking out white supremacists enriching uranium in a bunker with Cruise in as a brief cameo, but I guess we all have our own take. :monkey3 :lol

I see that the director deliberately wanted Maverick's villains to be "nameless and faceless" so that the movie feels more timeless and not a product of one specific geopolitical conflict but how crazy that Iran of all countries actually uses F-14's to this day so their excuse to put him back in one of his old fighters turned out to be pretty freaking valid!

When Tom Cruise opened his eyes in the snow my audience actually applauded. I was fascinated by that because it wasn't this big crescendo of a moment per se but I think viewers are now so used to Legacy characters being killed off (Han, Luke, Leia, Stark, Bond, Egan, etc.) that there was a moment of pure elation when that didn't happen.

Rethinking this opening bit in my review...Maverick's team had to fly their fighters through a trench, avoid surface to air weapons above the trench, and then "miraculously" send not one but two projectiles into a literal exhaust port that gave access to potentially world ending superweapons.

Which means...Top Gun Maverick was a better remake of ANH than TFA. :thud:

They even ditch their targeting computers and fired manually for the kill shot.

It's been a while since I last left a summer-blockbuster-type of movie feeling so satisfied.
Really well done, and it's so refreshing to have a blockbuster that doesn't include superheroes or aliens. I love both, but it was high time we got a respite from the "genre" movies.
Tom Cruise is the true Last Action Hero.
It is our nature to do one thing correctly. Before him, we rightly tremble.

I still haven’t gone to see it :slap :gah:
Wait what?? I thought you said you were going a week ago (though now I assume surgery had something to do with it.) Either way go see it asap before JW bumps it out of all the good auditoriums!

This is like the new Batmobile all over again where it demands to be experienced in a Dolby Cinema!
