Heard he was called by another driver asking about a route and he was busy looking at a map and didn't notice the slow down sign 4km earlier.
Sounds like a BS excuse to me.
I'll be the first to admit that I don't know a thing about conducting a train. However, I do know a bit about pilotage and coastal navigation, which I can reasonably assume is at least as dangerous if not more so, so I'm going to go ahead and hazard a comparison here: Routes are laid out and planned in advance - given the nature of trains, I'm sure this is the case for them as well. He should - no WOULD - have known the turn was coming well in advance, sign or not.
I'm not saying he did this intentionally, but there is some gross negligence going on here... There's no way it's as simple as missing a "slow down" sign.
