I've seen it! This time around, they really filmed the book with all its hardscrabble weirdness -- and I've read the book very recently. One early reviewer (Variety) thought it lacked humor, so I'm bracing for other reviewers to pick up that note (reviewers are pack animals). I think the Variety reviewer has a tin ear; there's plenty to chuckle at. The girl is perfect, and without her it wouldn't be the story in the book. Bridges is great, and even though his "Crazy Heart" character is cut from the same different-drummer cloth as Rooster, Bridges absolutely does not repeat himself here -- in fact, he sounds almost like Barry Corbin or maybe Rip Torn in "Payday." Damon is great, gives LeBeouf fine layering of bravado and insecurity. Brolin is unrecognizable; he wears his character's stupidity like a mask. Pepper is quite good with limited screen time, and like Brolin, barely recognizable from his previous roles. This is definitely one of my favorites for this season, though admittedly this seems to be a low-key year. No idea what might get nominated other than "Social Network," which seems to be the only film with lots of admirers. The Motion Picture Academy has to nominate ten films. I'll be disappointed if "True Grit" doesn't make the cut.

I'm looking forward to this as well. As to other movies likely to see oscar nods, I'd assume Inception will do extremely well, and we'll certainly see Black Swan in the mix (they love flicks like that). I wouldn't be surprised to see The Kids Are All Right or Let Me In get some love too.

i was hesitant at first about them remaking this but didn't want to dismiss it altogether either. and as more trailers are being shown this looks like it will be a damn fine movie..............so giddyup............
