Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre tore a tendon in his right abductor during his UFC 100 bout in Las Vegas Saturday night, MRI results confirmed Tuesday.

St. Pierre, who said he snapped his abductor muscle in the third round of his unanimous decision victory over Thiago Alves, had already been handed a medical suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He’ll be out of action until Jan. 8 unless a doctor says otherwise.

The Montrealer underwent the MRI in his home town on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. Even if cleared by an orthopedic doctor, St. Pierre was still under a suspension until Aug. 11 for precautionary reasons, with no contact until Aug. 2.

Three other fighters were suspended for the same length. Yoshihiro Akiyama, who defeated Alan Belcher by split decision, suffered a fractured left orbital bone. If cleared by an ophthalmologist, he’ll be able to fight again on Aug. 11; otherwise, he’s out until Jan. 8.

Meanwhile undercard winners Jim Miller and Shannon Gugerty have minor injuries that will need doctor’s clearance in order for each to fight before January.

Frank Mir and Michael Bisping, both victims of knockouts at the hands of Brock Lesnar and Dan Henderson, respectively, were suspended until Sept. 10 with no contact until Aug. 26.

I think Frank Mir might have Brain Damage though.. he's already talking about a rubber match with Brock.

Looks like the winner of Swick vs Kampman gets the next shot at GSP's title. Well deserved imo, but it seems like a big step down from Alves and Penn.

...but I counted Serra out the first time too.

I think that fight will look like the Kampmann-Marquardt fight: Swick will swarm with punches and the Dane will go down. GSP is gonna murder Swick with takedowns and GNP imo.

You mean MW right? LHW is way too big. GSP said he walks around at 185 lbs. That's the max for MW which means most MW's are considerably bigger. He says he'd need to add some weight to have that Superfight with A.Silva (who I hear walks around at like 220 lbs.)

woops yes MW, typing and drinking at the same time can be hazardous as you have just witnessed :D

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know why there is a lack of "gracie" fighters these days? Im talking about fighters from the actual family.

:D

The only problem with GSP putting on weight imo is, will he be able to compete with those extra lbs. because that's completely different than weight cutting which is just water, not actually gaining/losing real weight. 15 - 20 extra lbs. of real weight (fat/muscle) can be hard to adjust to in such a short period of time. Will that change affect GSP negatively!?

If they do fight.. I think I'd have to give the edge to A.Silva.

Doesnt GSP normally walk at near or just over MW weight?

He says his normal walk around weight is 184 - 185 pounds. 185 lbs is the MW max but like most divisions, the majority of fighters in MW are 200+ lbs. Anderson Silva has said his normal walk around weight is 220 - 230 pounds. He's a big MW. For GSP to fight as is, he'd come in small. That's why he said he feels adding some weight would be in his best interest if a fight between himself and A.Silva took place.

Has GSP fought at any other weight besides WW?

Nah.. that's why the term was created (originally for Sugar Ray Robinson) to compare fighters of different weights by skill, ability, etc. to determine a "best" since most of those fighters would never actually meet.

Cro Cop vs Dos Santos is confirmed for UFC 104. Its the 1st of a 3 fight deal Cro Cop signed with the UFC.

:(Damn. I hope that's not true. I want to see him in Dallas at 103. Swick vs Kampmann for main event would be the lamest numbered UFC main event ever.
