Have you considered Austin? It's got a great atmosphere and lots of film stuff going on. It's still in its 'growth' phase in the industry (much like Vancouver, I suspect), but the people are really friendly. I lived there for 8 years though, so I'm biased. I'd move back there in a heart-beat if it weren't for Sideshow :) It's nothing like the rest of Texas; like its own little oasis.

:lecture

Not too mention this is where she went to school and it seems you two have friends here.

The cost of living in LA is too ridiculous. 1300 sq feet for like $400,000? No thank you.

Austin has my heart. No doubt. I'm going to be so sad to leave here. And it's still on the list of places to settle. But, it's really hard to get into the 'film' part of Austin. Jenn (vahla Ha'nesh) says that there's Robert Rodriguez, but getting into that is next to impossible. Right now, she has an internship, a great one, and she's working on the new show Caprica. It's with NBC universal that she's working. And they film in Vancouver. So, it's possible if they like her, we can easily move out there, especially since I'm already Canadian, and she'd have work sponsorship.

It's just...I haven't been to Van or LA so I was wanting people's opinions on each place. I've been reading up each city and with Jenn there, in LA, she's not super happy. But she's not been there long so who knows....

This is the correct answer ............. plus theres too many Mexicans there.

Dang Mexicans! We're everywhere! :lol

Y'know it wasn't the illegals from Mexico that bothered me when I lived in SoCal...it was those frick'n frostbacks that left canadian bacon and molson bottles all over our front lawn! :monkey3

;)

I believe, crime wise...Vancouver is way worse then Toronto.Thats another thing to keep in mind, lots of hookers, bums in Van and crazy natives. This opinion is only based on what i hear from people that lived there and news etc.

Winnipeg is growing on the film scene and is the cheapest city in North America to live in, and is actually quite nice. Lots to do too, and we're in the heart of North America. Just saw a great Winnipeg film, the High Life that I know even Dusty would love.

btw I am a film student in Winnipeg. We have many many successful stories in our city.

Ah, didn't know you were there already :monkey1

I have some friends who work/have worked in the film industry there, after being in film school at UT, and they didn't have *too* hard of time finding jobs. But that was 10 years ago, so it may have changed. I assume you are aware of the film-texas site? Here's the Austin page: https://www.film-texas.com/Austin.html

Austin will always have my heart too :)

No doubt, us ******* even live in Vegas, we love the heat. But back on topic, I'd rather live in LA...Lots of fun stuff, ocean and your career. Bad things are cost of living and rain right now...oh and of course the traffic.

Well, I lived in Vancouver for almost 8 months back in 2008. I loved Vancouver! Really, the only downsides are the amount of rain (it can rain for days on end there), TONS of homeless people, and drugs are pretty big. Tons of gangs around.

On the flip side of things, Vancouver is without question the nicest city when the weather is good. The summer season was great. When the sun was out, my goodness it was just fantastic. I wasn't there for winter, but it rains instead of snows for the most part there. I loved the richness of the culture there. There's people from all walks of life and backgrounds. People are quite nice too. The whole arts scene is massive there too. That said, there is a world of opportunity there. Would I live there? I would, if it didn't rain so much.

I haven't been to LA so I can't say much about it.

The B.C. government announced changes to the provincial tax credit system Wednesday that will sweeten B.C.'s labour tax credit for the film and television industry.

job hunting / security may become a little more realistic within Vancouver.

Well, I live in Vancouver, BC and we're hosting the Winter Olympics next week. Not much snow, temps. around the low teens.

Lots of dif. factors for your decision:

+s Our tax situation for the film industry should improve shortly, beautiful surroundings year round: you can surf and partake in winter sports the same day. Friendly people.

-ves: high cost of living & housing costs are some of the highest in the world. Some questions as to what the Olympics will actually cost us in future with increased taxes etc.

Having only visited LA numerous times: I still prefer Vancouver.

Didn't California experience an earth quake at 6.9 off the coast? You may have meant it on a political level, but either way, I would be scared to live on the coast in Cali.

ya but vancouver is suppost to be wiped out tommorow or in a thousand years scientist dont know every year there is dozens of tremours in the ocean and evidence of the ocean floor cracking and one day there will be a huge sonamy, watched a documentary about it last year, but vancouver is warm year round, just lots of rain as well.

Can anyone tell me where the 'good' places to live in Vancouver are...and the places to stay away from? North, west, etc...and neighborhoods are good to know also.
