I'm guessing Spielberg has final approval because even as perfect as Raiders is, I bet Lucas could find something to tinker with.

Random giant ants and monkeys to better visually "tie" the film together with the new crappy one.

Also, Indy yells "no... noooooooooooooooooo!!!!" as he points the RPG at the Ark.

And when Indy uses the whip to get across that drop-off in the Idol chamber, he'll have the Tarzan scream.

Does Lucas have the power to do what he wants with Raiders or does he have to with with spielbergs approval?

I used to think not but then look at KOTCS. *fart*

I think Spielberg is more of a purest. I can't see him messing with it and not letting the original be out there.

I read an in-depth piece on the restoration of Raiders and it sounds so promising. It will be awesome ! Most of it is just lighting and color saturation as well as sharpness.

Think of Close Encounters. You will be happy.

I'd like to think that but then I heard some of the things he added to KOTCS and I have lost some faith in the bearded one. But he's still the best director of all time so he still has some street cred with me.

:lol No doubt the sword-wielding guy who Indy shoots in the marketplace will shout "No!.....Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!" too, as he drops down dead. :lol

But I think given it was not one of his classics and proven hits, he tried to make it more. The originals will not be messed with !

You guys know about the subtle and I do mean SUBTLE changes in Raiders, right? For the HD conversion they took the reflection of the cobra off the glass in the well of the souls scene and they added a digital matte for the desert convoy truck going off of the cliff. Both look great and aren't intrusive in any way to the overall movie.

Though in fairness, and whatever you think about their reasoning, Spielberg et al. must have made this change out of concern for the kiddies or whatever. It isn't head-scratchingly weird changes like the ones Lucas is doing here.

That's the key.

Vintage Lucas: Great
Contemporary Lucas: Blah

Just like the toys!

The keyword here is subtle. He didn't do any subtle changes to Star Wars. :(

Actually after all I've read, it seems that old George's career is just luck. In my experience there is no such thing as luck! Haw! He surronded himself with the right people and had wonderful ideas. But was luckily bound by time/technology/money. And people didn't kiss his ass all the time.

That's not been the word since January 1997. :wink1:

Well, he obviously had talent... THX-1138, American Graffitti, Star Wars... It wasn't JUST luck.

And he's obviously a shrewd businessman. Sure, SW would have always had its fans, but he expanded that in a big way... Not to mention THX, LucasArts, ILM, etc.

But that success obviously came at the expense of his filmmaking abilities. I mean, let's face it - the ONLY movies he's directed since '77 were the prequels. THAT'S IT!

He has some talent as a writer but has obviously become full of himself and surrounds himself with yes men. He's still got great ideas but a LOT of bad ones need to be EDITED OUT! :)

I think it's going really far to say that Lucas never had any talent. But clearly, that talent and his good sense went the way of the dodo somewhere along the way, and he only got more and more deluded and bizarre as time went on. He isn't the only guy it's happened to, either. Look at John Carpenter, Frank Miller, John Byrne, Sting (of the Police--wrestler also counts), Marlon Brando, M. Night Shyamalan, etc. Seems far less often that we get a guy like Spielberg who, despite his faults nowadays, is still really damn good at his art, and has been consistently good for several decades.

I meant luck as in the creative sense, he is a GREAT business man. He is talented for sure but not as much as I previously thought. Check out the making of Star Wars & Indiana Jones books, they inadvertently make him look like a bumbling ****** and that is was sheer happenstance the movies turned out as good as they did. As perfect as a movie that ROLTA is it was scary how close it was to a total disaster.

Those just shot up to the top of my To Read list. :lol
