Sorry if it has already been covered in the thread... but I'm curious what kind of turntables / gear you guys are using! I like hearing about everyone's different set ups.

To start, I'm using a Pioneer PL-550 turntable at the moment with an Audio Technica AT440mla cartridge. I've owned Rega, Pro-Ject, Marantz as well as a slew of cruddy DJ tables, but I haven't heard a table+cartridge combo (that doesn't cost $2k+) that I like as a much as my current one.

Here it is:

I may need a better one. Even though it's only a year or so old, it doesn't sound quiet (if that makes sense) during the start of a record.

Oh, and no matter what we say about Mondo, they have EXCELLENT customer service. My records came warped (the sold out editions too of Alien), and they replaced them for me quick!

Does a different cartridge make a big difference?

Absolutely! It's arguably the biggest factor in how your records sound in tonal quality. The thing is that there is no right answer because everyone's ears are different. I have friends who have set ups that I hate the sound of, and they love it. You just have to try some out and see what's right for you.

I am going to try the Ortofon Red.

I owned the 2m red and wasn't the biggest fan but I know a lot of people who swear by it. It was very finicky for me (on a pro-ject debut carbon) to set up properly as I was getting tons of inner groove distortion. When I finally got it set up right it sounded good but was still a little bright for my tastes. I prefer something a little more neutral-sounding for the same price point like the shure m97xe

I better check mine! :panic:

EDIT: OK, not warped. But that Alien colored disc is so dark, it's almost black! :slap

Inner groove distortion? I wonder if that's what I'm hearing. Like I said earlier, it's not completely quiet when I first start a record before the song starts.

Inner groove distortion happens later on playing one side of a record, it is when the stylus starts tracking toward the center label and you may hear sibilance (distortion) or the harsh "ssshh" sound over high frequencies like drum cymbals or vocals.. It's because a stylus generally has a harder tracking the same angle toward the center of the record, some styli are better at it than others and some need to really be set up properly in order to avoid it. Some people are also more sensitive to it than others where one person may get driven crazy by it another may not even notice it at all.

Anyway, what you're describing doesn't sound like it because it is happening at the start of the record and not the end. When you say not completely quiet, what kind of sounds are you hearing? Clicks/pops or static/white noise? That is all generally pretty common before the start of the record in the deadwax as the stylus is traversing grooves that don't have any sound on them but is still making physical contact with the record. Once the song starts the noise should go away.. That will be the same regardless of which cartridge you choose and of course everything depending on how the record was pressed!

It's more like a white noise type of sound. It's after the initlal pop from placing the needle on the record and before the first song plays.

Yeah, I always listen to my records. Unlike someone I know........ :rotfl:monkey3

Hey!

I have read that as well but I am willing to take the lesser of two evils in this case.

I will say that the Shure was also on my short list and it is between the Shure and the Ortofon for me.

I would (and did) try both! Amazon's return policy is your best friend ;)

That sounds pretty normal. Some cartridges will do better than others, but don't expect for the noise to eliminated entirely. Some factors don't have to do with the cartridge such as how dirty the record is, faulty pressings, etc but otherwise that noise sounds normal from what you described.

Yes. A better cart can make the world of a differnce in the right set up.
