Anybody have a link to a good weathering tutorial? Was just going to use some soft chalk or paint but if there's a better and proven method please post.

I've read some tutorials that recommend the use of chalks and paints for weathering. I've actually had great luck with sandpaper and real dirt. I usually sand the clothing to give it that "worn" look and add planter dirt. For mud, add a little water. For a rust look, I usually find an old rusty nail and rub into the clothing. Hope that helps.

I don't know of a tutorial...

But I use Sanding blocks to weather my fabrics, I use a wash of brown or black for differing levels of filth. I apply the wash to the clothing by brush, making the mix more water and less paint if it needs a lighter look with less dirt. And I use more paint and less water for the more greasy and filthy it gets. I pay attention to high wear areas and it's really just knowing what would get dirty faster, use examples from your own life or people you know who work outside.

As for caked mud or dirt I use Tamiya weathering sticks, those things ROCK! :rock

I just posted this in the military section the other day... someone had the same question. It's applicable here as well though. In addition to what DA said... I use chalk pastels for the appearance of dirt etc. I also will use baking soda/ sodium bicarbonite mixed with a little bit of paint and use that on the boots to simulate mud/ dirt. Some people use water colors but I prefer the pastels, I think they are easier to work with. Whatever your are comfortable with. Here's a few pics of figures weathered with pastels and examples of the boots weathered with some baking soda/ paint mix. Pics are crappy but you get the idea. Hope they help.
