Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

While we"re at it let's add Paul Fix as Dr. Piper!! :yess:

Wellllll, if we're talking episode specific characters, I'd way rather have some of the characters from "The Cage" that have been mentioned (Pike, Vina, Number One, Young Spock) than Dr. Piper. Not that he's not on my list, it's just that there are a ton of other characters on the list above him. Heck, even for that episode, I'd gave to say that Gary Mitchell and Dr. Dehner would be more of a priority on my want list than Dr. Piper. But all that would be waaaay down the road anyway...yes?

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

My thought is that separate is definitely the way to go. I know it's a tiny, delicate piece, and a defining prop for the character, but I would use it as an accessory - I wouldn't necessarily want to display her with it permanently, and if it was integrated into the sculpt, it would look terrible if it broke off because it is so delicate. Also interested in how it would be made removable...if it's designed to fit into the natural contour of the ear canal and hang there, that would be cool, but if it involves a weird, unnaturally round peg hole in her ear for the earpiece to plug into, I think I'd rather just have it as something she could hold in her hand. I'd rather have a clean, natural looking sculpt than one with a round peg-hole in her head for an accessory to have "functionality". The exception to that would be if peg holes were made for her earlobes so her earings could be done as separate pieces (would have to be made of durable material like Indiana Jones' hat, so they wouldn't break) that could be epoxied in place and have some "dangle" to them. I don't think anyone had ever attempted that bit of engineering for Uhura's sculpt before. While not essential per se, it would take the figure to another level of detail (dare I say "Hot Toys" level?) and look awesome. Something to thing about...

Oh, and YES, I'm in for her earpiece (as a separate accessory)!!

What might work is a small hole in ear and a tiny metal rod in earpiece so it would ancor corectly. this might be done while curing in mold. or two heads one without piece and one with earpiece.

the metal rod would allow for a small inner ear hole which unless you look directly at the ear it should not be to severe.

On the subject of Phasers, I am working on a 2 piece TOS version. Phaser 1 is sculpted and ready to mold;I'm just about ready to start work on 2. Here's Phaser 1...

Having an accurate full scale model has been a tremendous help on this project...PS

Either one sounds like a good solution. I think if I were to choose between two head sculpts or one with a tiny hole within the ear canal and an earpiece with tiny metal pin, I'd go with the separate earpiece that fits into the hole. My concern was that the hole would be large and/or detract from the look of the sculpt - the metal pin sounds like a good way to work around that problem.

Can I also say that it's nice that this level of thought is going into this project? Back in the day, Playmates would have done the whole head as one vinyl piece, slapped it on one of their ugly, poorly articulated bodies with a cheap dress that velcroed up the back, and thrown in some soft-sculpt, disproportionately sized, generic accessories like a phaser and tricorder and called it good. I mean, it was nice to have some representation of the character, and there weren't many options back then (I think Dragon models was the high-end of 1/6 scale at the time? So if you had time and skill, you could have custom-bashed some half-way decent figures...), but it always left me wanting something better; 15 years later, I might be getting my wish! :clap

Hey, I have a 1:1 phaser just like that! Waxy, you and Spenser do some incredible work. Can I just say how enjoyable this hobby is with so many talented individuals putting their labor on display for folks to enjoy and sometimes purchase. This is what makes this hobby fun for me!

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Oh, since we've been on the topic of accessories (and specifically ones appropriate for the Doctor/Nurse duo), could i just point your attention to something Nanjin picked up on when making his uniforms and accessories:

DSC03610_zpsa71bf6e1.jpg

See that little pouch on McCoy's left hip? That is straight outta the show, and it was brilliant of Nanjin to incorporate it - such a nice touch. It's a little flip open satchel with a flap that's secured by velcro, and it houses McCoy's syringes and vials when he's on away mission. THAT would be an amazing extra to go with the syringe accessory!

Did the pouch for bones clip on his pants or a belt or pocket like the phasers did with a clip?

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Hi guys I was online lastnight and found these pics from the museum of spocks uniform and looked at others and was surprised to find out that the pants was made of Lurex

P122_12.jpg

I was at a warehouse fabric store and happened upon a yard of it in the salvage bin. It was labeled black lurex knit. so I wanted to ask if this is cool or did you only want solid black.

This will make about 20 pairs of pants so after that I'll have to see about using black glitter knit.

That is a tough call, and it's difficult to say without an idea of what the material you're considering looks like. If the "glitter" is subtle, it might be really cool, because it would be kinda retro and faithful to source material. But sometimes material looks different when filmed (i.e. the color of the gold tunics) and I think what most fans want is what they remember, not necessarily what was 100% accurate. I'm pretty sure people want Kirk's tunic to look gold and not greenish, like his casual tunic, as it did in actuality.

So, to answer you question with a question, could you post a few pics of the lurex material you found?

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

the lurex pants didnt look subtle this is a close up pic of fabric person took of pants. the lighting on the show was dull so it made it subtle

P122_11.jpg

and the lurex i baught is the same exact look

its the same fabric the studios used for julie newmar's catwoman jumpsuit lighting makes all the difference

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

on the 3rd season i read they changed to dacron pants with lurex cuffs

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

I have no problem doing just plain black i just thought id get the input of you guys 1st.

i am however going to make this cuff because i dont like the ones i saw for 1/6th scale

Huh, now I just don't know what to think. I never noticed it before, but I went back and watched a few different scenes - when they are "planetside" (i.e. filming on location under sunlight), you can definitely see there's some shiny quality to the material. Not so much when they are filmed on a sound stage, though there is a difference in the quality of the black between their pants and, say, their boots or their collars. Interesting. My gut feeling is that black is still the way to go for the pants, even though I LOVE attention to detail. Black is the way you tend to remember their pants, not sparkly black like Catwoman's outfit. At least that's my feeling. Any other thoughts out there?

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

I'd prefer the pants stay black. At 1:6 scale the pattern will probably look too distracting. Is there an ETA and projected cost on the uniforms? I'd like to put in my request for slots. I'm hoping the full bridge crew will be produced, clothed and assembled in the next 6-9 months and WGP is working on TNG and DS9

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

I also want to put my name in for a slot for uniforms. I've also been following Spenser's thread, but I don't know what it is, I seem to be being ignored, for lack of a better word? People are getting uniforms in the mail, without any official confirmation that they're even ready in the thread, and even though I've posted many times saying I'm interested, I've never really had good communication. Not saying it's intentional, just that it seems like a close-knit group.

Regardless of anything else, I NEED a green wraparound for my Kirk. He's in a Tribbles display in his standard gold, and it drives me nuts! LOL :)

Here's some current pics!

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Right now we are testing fabrics for female figure Yeoman Rand before We do male figures. My 1st test with fabric for female did not want to co-operate with the body So im going to reserve it for Scotty.

I will make a few paints out of lurex just in case someone wants a few on screen likeness. I am also going to attempt the slit pockets the tos pants had so you can slide phaser and wear it on pants like ive seen on screen.

I noticed on some advertisment shots for crew they used velour but they used poly knit for screen performance. Right now It's just me myself and I making these uniforms, Once i get rand out and it's approved I'll make patterns and send it to rick to get more seamstresses on board. Im testing patterns and I need to inform you the traditional 8 piece patterns for females only work on human models i have to reduce it to 6 patterns to avoid looking like mattel's chincy patterns.

In the 60's they used simple yet complex sewing patterns meaning they look easy but make you want to take a stroll down wonderland mad waiting for the bloody tea party. It also doesnt help they constantly changed the design for the female's. So As soon as the new fabric comes in and i finish rand and it's approved ill speed threw the males because their simple.

The casual wrap-around tunic is a must for me as well (in addition to the standard gold tunic). Don't underestimate the popularity of this tunic, Kirk wore it a lot and it is almost as iconic as his duty uniform look. There were three variations on the casual tunic, but I think most people would want the one from "The Trouble with Tribbles"...though some may want the variation seen in "The Enemy Within", as that's the episode with "*** You Up" Kirk leering at Rand.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Which head and uniform is that? I may need to pick up a Gorn at some point. That looks very cool.

That Gorn looks awesome! At first glance I thought it was the Playmates 1/6 Gorn figure, but then I noticed it was correctly proportioned, so I knew it couldn't be. :lol

It must be a cast statue, and it's very nice! Makes me sad we don't have a better 1/6 Gorn action figure. I wonder if there's a way to use the head, forearms, legs from the knees down and outfit from the Playmates Gorn and bash it on to a body that has the proper bulk (Playmates Gorn looks malnourished). Don't know what body you'd use to get that rubbery look to the skin...?
