What are your most favorite film trilogies?

(For myself, any set of three films that are connected in some way can constitute as a trilogy, and even if the series of films extends past three, in my opinion.)

My list, in no particular order, save for #1 and #2:

1. - Spider-Man Original Trilogy - Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007)

2. - The Dark Knight Trilogy - Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

3. - Captain America Trilogy - Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016)

4. - The Avengers Trilogy - The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018)/Avengers: Endgame (2019)

5. - Toy Story Trilogy - Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010)

6. - Star Wars Original Trilogy - Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Star Wars: Return of the Jedi(1983)

7. - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

8. Deadpool Trilogy - Deadpool (2016), Deadpool 2 (2018), Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) I haven't personally seen DP&W yet, but based on the overwhelming positive reception I'll throw it in.

9. How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy - How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), How to Train Your Dragon : The Hidden World (2019)

I'm counting it, Hopkins was pretty much playing the continuation of Fairbanks character, plus the last one is somewhat the same plot as DK Rises just 7 or 190 years before, depending on how you count it. :wink1:

Dollars Trilogy

Though it's really more celebrated as a trilogy in spirit, than strict narrative, For using the same Director, stock lead actors and characters, similar style , tropes, composer. However he does pick up the iconic poncho towards the end of the GB&U, making it a narrative prequel to aFFoD.

Star Wars OT Trilogy

They get somewhat progressively worse, though worth mentioning:

Ok I cheated theres only 5, but if as intended you attach the first one to the last (as packaged above), it makes a couple of great trilogies in an infinite loop.

The first 2 of the Alien franchise, though adding the 3rd or whatever it's up to, brings it down a notch.

The Thin Man Hexalogy?

The real Phantom Prequels:

And though made for low-budget TV I'll include the SC-FI Chanels Dune Miniseries, which included:
Dune ----- Dune Messiah ----- Children of Dune.

Yeah 60s-70s Apes and TV Dune are here, despite the more modern CG takes. :wink1:

No particular order:

  • Star Wars -- Original Trilogy
  • Spider-Man -- Original Trilogy (Raimi)
  • LOTR Trilogy
There are other films I've loved that are part of a trilogy ... the first two Alien films, the first Matrix film ... but I didn't include them because I feel other installments were either too weak such as with the subsequent Matrix films, or too dissonant such as with Alien 3: not bad for what it was but I can't reconcile it with the other two. Same goes for Indiana Jones ... I thought the first two films were bangers but they really lost me from the third onward.

I give Raimi's Spider-Man 3 a pass because all of the films have an innocence and goofiness to them, and similarly I let ROTJ slide because SW was of its time and accomplished a lot.

The LOTR is for me, a massively ambitious and for the most part successful adaptation, and as such probably the strongest of the three I've chosen.

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, so I guess this is what stayed with me over the years.

Lord of the Rings
Jurassic Park OT
Indiana Jones OT
Spider-Man (Raimi trilogy)
Star Wars OT (though the prequel trilogy does hold a special place for me, being a teenager at the time and feeling the hype of new Star Wars movies)
Back to the Future

Honorable mention that probably won't be on anyone else's list: Eastrail 177 Trilogy (Unbreakable, Split, Glass)
