Good stuff. Do you work in Quality?

Not anymore. It was excellent money while it lasted! But the company I worked for moved all of it's production to China & Mexico!

Now I'm a Special Education Vocational Instructor/Paraeducator.

I fell into this profession purely by accident! :lol But I find that I really enjoy it and that it's very rewarding!

No degree but trained by the United States Air Force that got me where I am right now, doing alright. Supporting my wife and son on just my income. Wifey goes to school full time so she could get her degree, she will be a dental hygienist. Cant wait till she grads, 4 more months baby!

Well right now I have a BA in History from Penn State, working on my Teaching Certification through Wilkes University (local but expensive). Eventually I'll go back for my Masters and possibly work toward my Doctorate because I want to move to the college level to teach Early and Medieval Celtic History. On the loan front - probably around $60 or $70K including interest after I'm done. Thankfully my Parent Loans (that my father wanted me to pay myself, understandably) were forgiven upon his passing.

I don't get the expenses for school you guys are paying, my GOD. You'll be working years if not a decade to pay those off. Are those loans for dorms too, food, beer?

If I ever have a kid, they are going the community college route the first few years and not living on campus. They will have a job throughout school. School loans are severe handicaps to starting out on life.

I lived at home throughout school, but my parents never paid my way for anything beyond food and rent. I paid for car insurance, school, books, everything else. Never needed a loan until I bought my home after college.

Or join the military, they pay for everything. Plus you get the benefits. But the military is not for everyone. But the best decision I made.

Loans are sometimes inevitable. If no one is willing to help you then you have to find a way to help yourself. I know when I was in college I had to pay for everything alone- tuition, books, housing, food, car etc. It's not easy. I was also working full time and had a scholarship.

Hmm. I guess I need to be thankful that my parents never kicked me out of the house, but I think parents should be expected to keep their doors open during that time if they give a ^^^^ about their children. Kicking the kids out at the wrong time can severly handcuff them to be losers all their life. Still, I didn't go to a school I knew I couldn't afford. Went to community college till I got my AA and knew what I wanted my BS to be in, then went to the local branch of the state college here in Denver rather than the big fancy Boulder school. My degree still says "University of Colorado". Not "University of Colorado for Cheapskates".

Hey, I may be paying for a while but at PSU I got a fantastic education (and changed my major three times) and now to get my teaching certification I am in a program that is actually, in my view, better than PSU. So I do not regret a single dime spent. Also my family made JUST enough to disqualify us for most aid programs, but now since Im still at home and I believe still being claimed as dependent on my parents/moms taxes I should get single parent status.

there was a spot on my local news not too long ago about tuition at NC universities that mentioned something like while school tuition has increased by about 400% over the last X number of years, the average houshold income has only increased 150%. So paying tuition is becoming more and more difficult....

I know for a fact that from 2003 to 2008 PSU tuition rose 50%, which were the years I attended. For the 08-09 year I know they were talking about another 7% increase.

Rising tuition costs is just more reason to go to the community college where its like $1500 a semester. I easily earned that before the bill was due. IMO no reason to rush off to a big school when your a freshman or soph unsure of what you even want to study.

Well, you are lucky but you have to remember not to generalize about others. My parents showed me and my sister the door during my junior year in High School. I wouldn't consider either of us losers. We both have graduated from College and are pursuing Masters degrees. :)

Thats pretty uncool of your parents if you and your sister weren't severly deserving of it. They put you behind everyone else.

Well, yeah it was a terrible situation. My dad made some horrible mistakes and we were living in a trailer. Dark times. We were pretty much forced out but at the same time we knew we had to leave.

I haven't spoken to my parents sincerely for years. They are lost to me and often times I do feel robbed but then I think about how things could have been much worse.

tough story man, awesome how you and your sister made it through that terribly tough time and have succeeded. :duff

I've thought about a masters degree, but in my current position its pretty unnecessary and I like where I'm at enough that I hope I can be here for 25 more years.
