This thread was inspired by Badmoon’s ghost picture thread.

I am curious about what events may have made any of you believe in ghosts.

Now, I do not believe in ghosts. But I did have an experience once that made me see how some people with a little more faith than me, could be made to believe. Here is my story:

As I joked in the picture thread, this actually did take place in a training area on Okinawa in the late 80’s when I was deployed there as a Marine. My platoon was split into its three squads and assigned to assist a combat leadership school as aggressors for the class. At the end of the first training day, 1st squad (the squad I was in) and 2nd squad made their bivouacs just 10 or 20 yards apart and 3rd squad was 1 or 2 miles away.

Well into the evening I and one other Marine, who were the last two to crash, heard noises coming from the makeshift GP tent of 2nd squad. We figured it to be one of the Marines from that squad going out to answer nature’s call, but repeated attempts to call out to whomever it might have been went unanswered. And we were a little surprised when the noise, moving all around the outside of the tent, ended at one side of a jeep trail and started again on the other side despite the fact that we saw nothing cross even with the light of our fire easily illuminating the area.

The next day, after the training, 1st and 2nd squads mounted 6-bys (trucks) and took off to get 3rd squad and head back to the barracks. During the drive, one of the Marines from 2nd squad related a dream that he had during the night. He told us that he dreamed that he woke to find the face of a demon floating over him. He immediately realized that he was dreaming and batted at the apparition with his hand and told it that he was not afraid because he knew he was dreaming. The face moved away and his hand missed it. He checked his watch and went back to sleep with the face still over him.

After the two of us from 1st squad told our story, we all made jokes about the coincidence. But after we picked up 3rd squad and told them the story, they reacted with shocked surprise. It seems that their squad leader was a former Satanist. And late the previous evening, he was teaching them how he used to summon demons. And they claimed that he was sending these demons to harass 2nd squad. And as near as we could figure, the three events all happened fairly close to the same time.

Wow Darth Cruel, that is a pretty amazing story :horror
I never really thought about the possible existence of demons. I don't really believe in them, but I see how your story could convince people.

Here's my story. (It's the same as in the Ghost Pictures thread) Don't really believe in ghosts, but experiencing this did change my mind a bit about a possibility that there might be "more".

OK guys, I have some ghost photo's too, but first the chilling story behind these photo's :horror

OK, so a couple of years back, my parents are at a birthday party. There's this woman there talking about something strange that happened to her.

She woke up in the middle of the night. At the end of her bed, there was a child sitting. And in the window-sill there was another child. Both of them dressed in strange old clothes. They just sit there doing nothing. She gets, scared gets out of bed, runs downstairs and drinks some water in the kitchen while she calms down. After a while she goes back upstairs to her bedroom and the children are still there...
She gets back in bed, pulls the blankets all over her head and falls asleep. The next day she wakes up and she believes it's all a dream...

A couple of weeks later, her nextdoor-neighbor talks to her about a strange dream she had. About two children appearing in her bedroom in the middle of the night.

Again... a week later or so, the womans youngest son says: "Mom, sometimes I see white things floating around in front of my window at night"

Now for the really chilling part... The farmhouse in which these people live is built next to a cemetery. And right next to the farmhouse is where the children were buried in older days :horror

It happens to be that my grandmother lives in the same village as this woman so a couple of years ago, at my grandmothers birthday, I decided to investigate.

Together with my sister and three cousins we went to the graveyard, at about 9 in the evening. My sister and my cousin stayed at the entrance because they where scared. My other 2 cousins and I walked around a bit, but found nothing strange.

While we were on the cemetary, my cousin who stayed outside got the "brilliant" idea of scaring us by taking a picture, the moment we get outside the gate...

When she showed us the photo later on, there was this really creepy fog like thing on the photo which none of us could explain...

True Story!!!

The photo's I mentioned are still in the ghost picture thread :)

somebody stole my hamburger. all my roommates went away for the weekend. i brought a whopper home and put it on the kitchen table. i then went to the bathroom and i think i made a short phone call after that. when i came back the BK bag was empty. no one else in the house. doors were locked. oh and no dogs or anything. :dunno

plus the water would sometimes be running in the bathroom when nobody else was around. really running. not a slow drip or anything.

I saw a ghost in Japan, and it scared me so damn bad that I STILL sleep with the covers over my head. One of the most insane things to ever happen to me, I could not believe it.

When I was in high school, I was home alone working on a final paper for the end of the semester. Started working on it when I got home and into the night. The only light that was turned on was in the kitchen (because it was still light out when I got home, so that's the only one I turned on). The rest of the house was dark. In the room I was in, you could see the reflection of the light from the kitchen, b/c it was straight down the hallway behind me (basically, my back was facing the door of the room I was in, which was open). The way the light from the kitchen was, I could see my silhouette in the screen (b/c the room I was in only had the light from the computer). Problem was, I also saw another silhouette walk straight past me, behind me. Very slowly. Mom didn't come home for another hour that night.

True story. I'll never forget it.

When my parents first moved to Maine from Massachusetts in the mid-70's, they bought a house in the country, and my mother had a few abnormal experiences. Generally, she would have feelings that someone was there when there wasn't (I had a few of those myself, but I was very young and little kids are crazy already), but one morning, getting me breakfast while my little brother was asleep upstairs, she heard heavy footfalls on the second floor. They were perfectly clear, and she was so sure that there was a man up there that she called the closest neighbor and they both went up to investigate, shotgun in hand. There was no one.

To this day she swears the house had a ghost.

In 2004, I was coming home from July 4th camping, and I stopped by the old house to talk with the current proprietors. I hadn't seen the place since I was 4. The people living there had bought it from my parents 25 years earlier, and were happy to show me around. When I breached the subject of strange happenings there, the woman laughed. She said, "You mean the ghost? Yeah. We know all about him." She then relayed the following incidents.

Often at night, the backdoor would open itself. It was below the master bedroom window, so they could hear the wind banging it. They'd go downstairs, lock it, and within minutes of getting back into bed, it would be open again. They'd also hear rummaging in the kitchen cupboards around the same time every night. A few times, the bathroom medicine cabinet would empty itself into the sink, and other times, the faucet would turn itself on, full blast. At the top of the stairs, many people experienced a voice greeting them over their shoulder. One of their daughter's friends refused to stay the night he said, "Hello," to her.

The biggest event was the afternoon that the wife came home to her husband taking a nap in their bed. She went back downstairs to the kitchen to start dinner, and shortly after, her husband came through the front door. Not napping. Not aware that he could have been as he'd been out. She went back to the room and the bed was empty.

Anyway, the owner previous to my parents was an old man who had died in one of the first floor rooms. He had lived there his whole life, having inherited the home from his parents.

To answer the OP, I have personally never experienced anything to convince me that there is anything in the universe beyond the perfectly natural. I've heard plenty of stories from others, but I'm nothing is going to convince me that whatever happens in their stories can only be explained according to some kind of super-nature.

EDIT: almost forgot. The rummaging in the cabinets: according to his daughter, who they managed to track down, that was where he kept his nightcap, which he had at the same time every night.

Let me start by saying my mother was a huge believer in the supernatural. That in itself was enough to make me the supreme sceptic, as we rarely saw eye to eye.
The first time I had a personal experience I was working overnite in a supermarket. I went up stairs to the breakroom to get a cup of coffee. It was locked and all the lights were out except for the vending machines. I turned on the light, cleaned up the machine (2nd shift always left it a mess.) went in the mens room to was the coffee off me, turned on the lights and immediately felt like someone was in there. I looked in the stalls but I was alone. I went and got my coffee and went back to work. Suddenly felt someone uncomfortably close to me and all the hair on my arms stood up.I looked around and everyone was accounted for but still felt it. I went down and talked to this girl I worked with (Who was secretly planning on entrapping me in matrimony. Haven't ecaped yet but thats another story) and explained it. She came down and didn't notice anything until I moved a little bit away from her. Then she saw the hairs raise up and asked if it was happening again. She asked me to relay the story again and asked if I turned the lights out once I was done, which of course I hadn't. Once I turned the lights out it was fine, although she said she felt something woosh past us as we went upstairs.
After my mom died the heavy doors leading to the back stock room would open and close randomly for about two weeks, with the sound resounding through the store.
My son used to wave at the curtains as an infant, and as a toddler he recognized the photo of my deceased grandfather as "the man in his room".
Another time my brother had a dream that he was visiting my dad after he passed away. He said his new house was different than our old one but it was next to a river where Orcas were diving in and out of the water. I never spoke about this to anyone.
My son woke up and told me he saw my dad. They went and got ice cream and watched the killer whales.

About 20+ years ago I worked at an alluminum shop and tape measures and pencils would vanish when you weren't looking and wind up on the other side of the shop. It turned out the previous owner died in a fire on the property about 25 years prior.
