A hybrid hey? Well, interesting.....but there's still the 'real fabric!' and 'part poseable!' factor that makes them more 'action figure' :D orientated to me!
As I've said, statues are art. Weta made the weapons and costumes for the film, and Weta made the weapons and costumes for the statues. Nuff said!

BUT I know the Sideshow line will be very good. People seem to hark on about likeness all the time....maybe that is more of an 'action figure' thing than a 'statue' thing...

Polystone is art, the 1/4 scale mixed media are dolls.

 You are not seriously trying to say that the PF figures are not art right? Have you just ignored that entire section on the SS site? Not art, so the sculpting for the head, hands, etc is .... ? I realize you are partial to the "statues," and I for one love them too, but to label them as art over another "art form;" seems quite small-minded. :peace

If a man shooting paint from his colon is considered art, you may want to revise that statement.

The early PF had semi-poseable arms and legs, but they don't anymore. These figures/statues are meant to keep one and one pose only.:D

Well, I'll order the first one, and see what I think! :D
OK and I'll order one of those cool looking WETA Statue things.... oh no!!! They're all sold out. I guess there was something to those statues.:peace

I can't wait to see who SS will announce as the 1st PF figure. :D
Even though I am hurtin' for room I think I will pick & choose which I like the most. Good thing they are only releasing a couple the first year! :joy

I can't speak to what the costs are of statues compared to PFs, but I do know that PFs are far more difficult to develop than statues which are just sculpt and paint. There's sculpt and paint on a PF but also :
finding the exact right cloth, making patterns, and then figuring out how to mass produce it. So I'm thinking it's far more expensive to make a PF than a statue, thus the higher prices.

And I find it difficult to believe that anyone who has seen a PF in person doesn't consider as great or more of an "art" as a statue.

I just got my first PF piece recently (SSE Dracula), and I honestly think statues pale in comparison. The clothing is so exquisitely tailored and the sculpt so lifelike, it's absolutely stunning. It really is like Lugosi stepped right off of the screen.

That is exactly how I feel obsoleteman! I look at my PF's and the cloth adds so much more to them then just being straight sculpture. It adds a even more of a musuem feel to them they look amazing.
I cant wait to see the Fellowship in this format and lets not forget about the PF's bases!! Take a look at the wolfman's base and imagine what they can do for the LOTR bases!

This line is going to look amazing.

I have not seen one in person yet, but I saw a comical picture of Luke 1/4 scale with his shirt pulled over his head and it does look like a doll underneath. I guess I am partial to the Statues because, tradionally, Statues are considered true Art.

Mixed-Media Art, OK I can go with that.

I really am looking forward to seeing the new LOTR figures. If it looks great, I'll order. But I love the orginal Sideshow Weta pieces, they define the movie.

I never thought much of the 1/4 Scale figures until I bought my first one being the Hellboy 1/4 PF. Boy talk about impressive, my views have changed. My vote goes to Sideshow 1/4 Premium Figures for sure! Dont get me wrong, Im still keeping every single Weta statue I have but I can see over the years my 1/4 PF collection will be the majority. What Creecher said earlier...

I reckon people are going to have to eat their words when the PF's come out. Sideshows scupltors will capture the likenesses better than Weta has, and the detail of the PF's is stunning.

Could of not said it better myself. I still like statues and do not think they are boring ... *yawns..........:sleep..................Oh sorry, must of drifted off. :p

Final Verdict: SIDESHOW 1/4 Premium Figures over Weta any day.

I collect both and feel the PF's and 12 inch are more like dolls. It just seems for the PF's, all the work is in the sculpted head which is thrown on a body, then clothes are put on. 1/4 Wolverine looks great, but head on a body. The clothes look great, but for me it gives it that dollish look.

I guess that is the same point I was trying to make when I said Polystone SSW Statues were ART and PF are dolls. After all, were are talking about Sideshow Toy.

Yah, but figures and dolls can be both toys and collectibles (if you are into collecting them) and thus my statement about Sideshow Toy. Changing the company name does not change what you produce, and they still make toys (of high quality).

Funny thing is Ive had people say the same thing about my Weta statues.

Personally, I don't consider the SS/W statues any more art, than I would, a reproduction painting. As far as I'm concerned they are wonderful collectibles, but not art. Now, if they were original sculptures, or castings done by the artists, and then painted by the artists, I might consider them art.

I would like to chime in on this issue but Sideshow has offered me a free 1/4 scale LOTR item to keep my mouth shut. :censored

Just kidding!

OK Where to start...

Weta or SS new PF's? I'm gonna stick with the SSW products, that being said, I am willing to see what the new 1/4 scales will look like. I am not giving up on the new line without seeing it.

Are the PF items dolls? Well IMHO, yes! To me the clothes(material) make them dolls. Also the fact that they are basically sculpted heads and hands and the body remains unsculpted makes them less desirable to me. That being said, PF's are not dolls like the Buffy/Bond/Military figures. At least the PF's don't have "bendy arms." But the clothes are what kill the PF's for me. I do really like the Doom PF, which is more like a statue to me, only the cape is material and the whole body is sculpted.

Well that should be good for now.

Statues all the way! :moon

:sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep ..... jk Fubeca.

:mwaha Wow Scott, Im glad your such a hardcore 1/4 PF fan.

If Weta was to release more 1/6th scale statues I'd most likely be all over it based on Money, space, and other life issues. I'll get some of the 1/4th PF LOTR Figures because having seen the other lines at SDCC. I will admit the real clothed look is something that I'm just not that big on.
