I will wait to see how the production pieces look before even attempting to cast judgement.

If they pull this off it could be great. The problem is that is absolutely hard to replicate the subtlety of the glow effect once you start mass producing. Not to mention the $900 price doesn't inspire confidence that the factory workers are being thrown some extra cash for extra love and care when painting these.

I like the spray on the prototype. How that will translate into production is anyone's guess. If the factory doesn't do it just right, it's going to look bad. That type of risk on a piece like this, I would probably vote to remove it. If they did it well, I'd prefer it, but chances are descent that they'll screw it up and cake it on too much in places it should have been really light.

I'm kind of surprised more people aren't liking the light up base idea.

Chris

Nobody ever seems to use them after the first week. Light up bases end up being a bit of a gimmick.

I guess I just don't understand why Sideshow decided to go this way with it. I know it's based on a Jerry's art but a 2D representation is different than a 3D statue. Again, based on the pictures from SDCC (and the pictures on the product page) the prototype looks great. I just don't think it's worth the risk on Sideshow's part. What I mean is that I doubt there are many people that would buy this only because the lava effects are painted on. But there is a greater potential of customers not buying it because they don't like the lava effects painted on. Personally, if I was making the call, I would think it's just worth the risk.

:goodpost:
I'm in the latter of the collector categories mentioned. I've decided to pass precisely because of the glow effect. I've never been a fan of it previously and I'm not going to start now with such a pricey piece. I think the price would be close to worth it if it wasn't for the paint. It really is a shame to me. I've been looking forward to this piece for quite some time. The silver lining is that I'll be saving a grand.

When it comes down to it, it's all about execution on the production pieces.

I voted for the addition of a light too btw as I just like little stuff like that that could elevate the piece even more.

Light-up base is too cheesy for this....I like it how it is..The light-up would give it a more kid/toy feel...

I sweat pieces like the Sauron mace from Weta really do have an amazing quality about them with regard to a lava effect. Its very subtle but it works.

I agree. Even the "battle damage" on Optimus Prime looks bad close-up - small dabs of grey paint on a blue surface of a $1200 statue isn't good enough for battle damage. I have no faith in the factory painters to apply the orange. They couldn't even put Arwen's eye stickers on straight, or remember to apply the Crimson Guard chest emblems, or or or etc. etc. etc.

Yeah, I'm holding off on this PO for the moment. Barad-dur, Dark Rider, Contract of Bilbo, Thorin's Map with Moon Runes, etc. etc. are hitting the wallet hard. If it had an ES, I'd probably have ordered it to be safe, but not going to tie up $180 if there is minimal risk of selling out.

You gotta spread things out with so many cool items being announced. Truthfully it's a smart move.

Here is an idea I found in the forum,it is so cheap and effective,so I think there is no risk to sideshow using real light.

Am I seeing that right?

Did someone drill through the base and place an LED puck in there?

Although the effect looks really good, why the hell would you want to destroy a collectible like that?

Chris

Probably because they're not that expensive to buy on the secondary market and it looks good :)

But yeah i'd never have the nerve to do that.
