So I'm finally gonna bite and get a blu-ray player, but I'm not sure what to get. I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount since this will probably just go in my bedroom, but I don't want something that'll be obsolete in 6 months.

Sony BDP-S350 ???

Worth it if I can get one for $200, or should I get something more?

PS3...rated as one of the best players and has the fewest problems with the newest blu ray releases.

The PS3 is still one of the best blu-ray players out there and if you have an wireless connection updating is very very easy. I have a PS3 and use it 99% of the time to watch blu-rays on it and the picture quality is excellent. (The PS3 also comes in handy to watch downloaded television series for it on the 1080p LCD)

I hear some good things about the new Sony BDP-S550, but for that money you can also buy a PS3.

I hope this helps you out a bit. ;)

I agree with the replies above. Get a PS3. I own one. Works perfectly. No problems whatsoever.

i'm not sure, but isn't the ps3 a little noisey?? just from the couple i've heard they tend to whine like the xbox360. i'm not sure which model of sony i got from costco,(could check website) but it sure seems to load quickly, and i haven't had any problems yet. i think it was $269 or in that area.
the nice thing about buying from costco is if it gives any sort of problem at all, or all of a sudden they get a better/cheaper model then you have up to a year to return it.:D just keep the invoice.

My launch PS3 isn't noisy, at least I can't hear the fan kick in.

Maybe I just have my surround sound to loud. :D

:lol:lol yeah probably

if you already have a ps3, then yes that would work the best in most situtations, but for me i have a seperate room to tv/movie viewing, and the video games do not get played on that system. the kids play games on their own tvs. for me i wanted a stand alone component that was dedicated only for movies, that's why i went my way.
also if you choose the right components they look sharp, and i just didn't want all the clutter that comes along with video game systems in my movie/collectable area.

so really it depends on what your end result wishes are. also i believe a basic stand alone blu-ray is still quite a bit cheaper than a ps3, though i'm not sure on that one, since i haven't yet got a ps3.(we have enough fighting over the xboxs and wii as it is:banghead

I would NEVER have any use for a PS3 besides movies, so why that over a standalone?

other than maybe they're a little easier with the wireless, to do upgrades/updates to your player, also onboard storage for items such as music pictures etc.
though i know of a few people that own them, and all they use them for is games and movies, (the extra options never get used) and if you don't want the games then i would go with a seperate player, just to keep things simple and cheaper.:wacky

It is also a great media server that can stream movies, music and pictures to your TV from your computers. Easy to update, compatibility with newer disks (lots of people complain about new disks always need new firmware for their standalones but PS3's play the disks), etc. I also have an external hard drive hooked up to it with most of my DVD's stored on it for easier access to them.

In the future I might b looking at a blu-ray player but I wouldn't like to own a PS3 since I might be getting a Elite 360, I have a modded XBOX first series all ready for a wireless media center so it kind of defeats the purpose of all the benefits for me as a user...

I would like to know what the best overal just movie stand alone player would be as well, I would prolly go with a higher end Sony at the end of it all anyways... That's usually all my standalone electronics and they've worked fine... Exception of a very earlier days DVD player that lasted me til recently from my college days...

What about peeps that all ready have all that functionality, it would suck to buy at that price and not use any of it... besides the player.

edit: or duplicate everything all over again, guess I could play Resident Evil which I haven't been able to play for while cuz of rights reasons, LOL

how many movies can you store on your external drive??
i'd like to do that with mine but anything i've looked at won't come close to the storage i need, unless i'm willing to spend thousands for movie storage.

Well I'm not sure how big his external drive would be but I would at least nowadays get a terabyte drive, if your directly storing a DVD without any compression ur looking at 8 gigs per movie if yah shrink it like most ppl to burn it's a lil under the 4.7...

I FTP a lot of codecs rendered movies ripped from DVD's to my XBOX whenever I wanna watch the movie and not buy the DVD if the movie is kind of iffy. My modded XBOX has XBMC on it to where it plays XVID, AVI, MPEG, etc.. and the size of those files are really small comparable to DVD format usually around 700-800MB...

edit: Ripping a blu-ray, ouch that's gonna eat up the space quick!!!

Well, I bought a 1 TB drive for about $175. I think the usable size is around 975 GBs. Max file size for the FAT32 format that the PS3 recognizes is 4 GB, so I shrink the DVD's (just movies in DD 5.1, no extras, commentaries or DTS sound) down to 4 GB. You should be able to easily do over 200 full DVD movies. You could shrink them smaller as well, it depends on what quality you want vs amount of space you want to use per movie. You can also convert the VOB from the DVD to another codec like MP4 to reduce the file size as well with a PS3 video converter.
