Why must people insult others on their political views?

Man, I know EXACTLY what you mean. This past weekend at a family gathering/Gator game get together... I had a bit of an argument with my step uncle, who is DEEPLY Repub.

It started out simple, I was talking to my Dad about the issues I believed in and why I was voting Obama. It was an easy conversation and wasn't going anywhere bad at all. My Uncle walks by, hears me... and starts going at me, saying that I was talking out of my ass.

He went as far as to say that I was just a young guy who didn't know anything, that I was "hanging out too much with academics"... if that can be construed as a bad thing.

We went back and forth, with me putting him in his place continuously and making him look stupid... Best part was... after the second time he repeated the "I don't deal in soundbites" bit to me... I brought it to his attention that by using that phrase, he was indeed dealing in soundbites. It was classic.

But, it should never have gotten that far. He decided to come at me and get rude, calling my ideas stupid.. trying to make me look like a fool for voting Obama. It really did rub me the wrong way and I was reminded of what state I live in, and how careful I have to be about speaking my mind in my community.

The part I hated was when he put his hand up and did the "yappy mouth" thing... I seriously wanted to punch him in the face.

But I went for the verbal smack down instead. Funny thing was, afterwards several people came up to me, hugged me, and told me that I was their hero for doing that. So I felt vindicated.

That's what bothered me as well, it wasn't that his views were not my own... but it was they way he wanted to "school" me in how wrong my views were.

I just don't understand why people can't just accept that others opinions don't have to be altered to fit their own.

No one seems to be putting their politcal views online...this is mearly about people, and how mean they get when they dont agree with each other. (I too was like this....but I realized its just not right......)

This is more on the topic rather then who should win or whatever.

So a few days ago at school, we for some reason decided to have a "fake" election. Now, personally, I just like Obama better. Doesnt matter the reason, because thats NOT what this thread is about. However, in doing so. I was told to (not to me exacly) "Get my head out of my ass" because I picked Obama. And a few other explitives that I forgot.

Look. One of my best friends is a republican and I ALMOST got into a debate with him, he said something that didnt register with me as...well correct. Now I could've called him an idiot right there....but why? He's a pretty cool kid, and he's a good friend so....why SHOULD I insult him because he has a different politcal view then me? Why do people...unfortuantly I must say this....mostly republican, must scream insults at people that share a different view?

If you go on the American Carol board on IMDB, theres a topic where people were pretty much asking all Librals to die.....the hell? I'd feel the same way if people said all Reps should die. They dont deserve to die! Only those really scary Christans, that protest, and cause pain to other people deserve that....

Sorry, I just needed to get this out. This ^^^^ annoys me to no end.
