Uplifting is not what I would call this movie… knowing that the Wicked Witch will end up dead under Dorothy’s house…Fantastic acting, wonderful singing, inspired cinematography, and better special/practical effects than many of the latest superhero movies. Everything about it was done so well!
Dance scene got me too. Honestly only moment of real joy in the whole story so far. I have a lot of problems with the story, but none of that is the movie's fault, as the source material is what it is. My wife thought it was excellent too, but definitely not an "uplifting" musical. It can't match the sheer joy of the Wizard of Oz.
this made the crows crie
I didn’t with that one lolthis made the crows crie
poor lil gollum fell
1. wrong witch.... that was the WW of the East.Uplifting is not what I would call this movie… knowing that the Wicked Witch will end up dead under Dorothy’s house…
Haven't seen the play. Does the sister in the wheelchair end up being the witch of the East? Is that why she had the ruby slippers? Because if she finally gets to walk only to have a house dropped on her that's tragic
You’re kidding right lolIs that bad or good?
lol I don’t no box office math. But apparently the lower the drop the worse it is right? . Cause I remember bvs had a historical 60 percent drop soooo I guess 29 ain’t do bad? You’re kidding right lol

My favorite movie of 2024 Ariana was amazing.I know folks were singing this movie's praises, pun intended, but I was not prepared for how much I'd like this movie. That shot of Elphaba with her giant cape flying near the end was pretty metal.
I'm guessing the book/play started the trend of "retconning" villains to have a tragic backstory, and I can see why. Just too bad that this movie was made after that trope has been run into the ground. But it just goes to show that a great movie can overcome those sorts of things.
Not sure if it was just great writing or if Ariana Grande is just that good of an actress, but I was cracking up with how bratty she was.
With Hamilton and now Wicked, I'm not sure if I might actually be a fan of musicals, or if I'm just a fan of good movies.
Not a fan of movies 'surprising' you with the Part One title as soon as you sit down to watch it. I first noticed it with Dune, and now it's here. If it's a Part One, that needs to be included in the marketing, on the poster, etc. I blame AMC for starting all this back when they split Breaking Bad into two final seasons. Ever since then, they've been splitting up stories to make more money and it bugs me. I guess in this case, it was known that it would be two parts, but I hadn't been following news about this movie at all.
One thing you can count in from a certain segment of the population , they will hate anything they , themselves cannot or do not want to identify with.I was more entertained by the "holding space" press junket conversation. I remember hearing that phrase "Defying Gravity" at the time, so when the song started and that chorus kicked in, it was a light bulb, "Oh, this is what everyone is talking about." It did not disappoint.
This is a superhero-based forum, so I know we've all been worn out with 'hero with billowing cape shots' but man, I can't recall it being used like this, for what it represents. I'd pay $300 to put this on my shelf. Maybe not $500 implanted hair money, but I could be convinced for sculpted hair money.
The whole "poster" debacle, after seeing the movie, I get it. With the themes about physical appearance, I can understand why Cynthia Erivo was upset about covering up her face. It seems obvious it was a misunderstanding, and based on her comments, it seems like she saw a lot of other inappropriate stuff that we didn't see, and this was just the last straw where she was like "Enough already." I read a comment later on from her that essentially said as much, something about how she "should've just called a friend." But honestly, she knocked it out of the park, so she's free to disagree with whatever.
I mean, again, when the movie's main theme is accepting other people's differences and getting past that, to then start harassing those actors in real life for being "weird", it's like 'way to miss the point, people.'
Now, I want to read the book the play was based on, but I don't want spoilers for Part Two ... but I don't want to wait till November. Oh, the agony ...
