Hey all - I picked up a wii - got the component cables, and got it set up and selected 480p and Widescreen modes on the online menus...

Noticed that the image defaults to 4:3 on my tv so I have to choose Widescreen 1 mode to give it that widescreen feel...

I take it that this is the case for all given its 480p and not 720p?

Kinda underwhelmed by the quality of the video...picked up No more heroes...

Thanks

are you using the component video cables or the normal composite cable?

If he's running in 480p then he's obviously using component. The composite ones are the ones that it comes with which runs in native 480i.

But yea don't expect much from the wii, you will always be underwhelmed by the video quality. Nintendo isn't aiming at graphics, you bought a wii waiting to be impressed by the graphics, prepare to wait forever, cuz it ain't happening.

Yeah, I was 'prepared' to see non impressive graphics, but was expecting PS2 quality...while NO more Heroes is fun, the graphics seem kinda in the middle of Ps1 and PS2

I am using my 1080 46" TV (same as I use to run my ps3 and 360) and I tried the Wii 'Widescreen' mode first, and 480p of course...the game seemed to have noticeable jaggies...

I then switched to the Wii 4:3 mode (still using 480p), and that seemed to help.

I guess my original question should have been: is 4:3 the native mode for all games?

Thanks all for reading.....

You just gotta use and play the Wii for what it does best. Great multiplayer party games and family games. Being active and playing games like:
Wii Sports (and the new RESORT), Mario Kart, Rockband, Wii Fit, etc etc

Thanks for the suggestions.....realistically, I'll get a few games like No more heroes 1 and 2...Silent hill Shattered Memories, Cursed Mountain...stuff like that...

Kinda annoying you have to use an USB adapter to connect online (man, I gotta get me a wireless router one of these days)....

I have an HDTV too and I ordered some component cables off Newegg. After you set 480p in the preferences, it will for some reason, crush the picture in. You have to set the TV to stretch out to see in widescreen.

Nah, Nintendo just needs to get this the times. The dreamcast had better online support than the Wii.

Why not check out The Conduit for the Wii FPS experience? That, Metroid Prime, the Mario games are probably the best for the Wii graphically.

Still nowhere close to PS360 graphics, but above PS2. Though keep in mind with the big hi-def TV you're always going to get jaggies.

Thanks, everyone. I may have to check out the conduit! I ended up setting the WII to 420p (of course), then 4:3 mode....I then change my TV setting to widescreen...seems to be the 'best' way to display the game on an HDTV....

And No more Heroes just rocks! The way to save games for it is classic!

Mario Kart is THE game to own on the Wii IMO. I can't tell you how many hours I've played that game over the last year. It's a GREAT multiplayer game, with lots of re-playability.

Be weary of online play though....In the last 6 months of so, "cheat code specialists" have overwhelmed the servers. :(

Conduit is suppose to look pretty but beware it's very generic, and plays like a old PSX or PS2 shooter, AI is pretty bad, and the level design is pretty blah.

Hmm, What screen options do you have on your set? I always have my set on "Full" (which keeps both 16:9 and 4:3 at their proper aspect ratios), and my Wii aspect ration looked fine right when I changed the settings on the system. My "widescreen" setting stretches out 4:3 pictures to 16:9, but also pulls normal 16:9 images so the sides of the picture are missing.

I don't know how your set works, but I had no issues with my Wii setup.

If you haven't played any of the Metroid Prime games, Pick up Matroid Prime Triolgy. You get both Gamecube Prime games with updated Wii controls, as well as a tweaked version of Prime 3 (which looks fantastic on the system).

Mario Galaxy looks great too, and is amazing gamplay-wise as well.

truth. mario kart is awesome. my kids dig it as well. smash brothers is fun also. i still have a ton of fun just playing wii sports with them.

i have been reading lots of good stuff about muramasa (sp) the demon's blade as well.

but for me, personally, what makes a wii rock is being able to download all the games i played when i was younger...i.e. castelvania, metroid, zelda, etc. and the fact that they update them every month is cool. i have been playing super empire strikes back and super return of the jedi for the past couple of days. i had forgotten how hard esb was...grrrr.

Thanks for the heads up

My tv has options like 'Normal,' 'Widescreen 1, 3,' ext. Normal is the option I use normally. With it, my PS3, 360 plays games in their native 16:9 screen mode, using 720p. When I set my Wii to 420p and Widescreen via the WII set up, the picture displayed in 4:3 using my TV's 'normal' mode. For the Wii game, I then switched my tv to 'Widescreen 1' which keeps the middle part the same and stretches the sides a bit. When I compared jaggies and all of that, it seems that for my tv, this is the optimal way for the game to play....

I have a Mitsubishi HD tv and it works similar to MooMooEgg's. The "Full" plays everything in the native aspect that your DVD or gaming system is outputting. Surprised your "normal" feature doesn't. You're "Widescreen" mode is probably similar to what my system calls "Stretched" which is the TV manipulating the data, so yeah, you probably lose quality.

I wonder if you tried using a different component input on your tv if you get a better result.

One thing I've noticed on mine is that the image is very bright (for instance on snow levels you can't really see the bumps and shadows)... you can tone it down a bit with the TV, but then the overall image is too dark.

I think its because I bought a cheap component cable... I plan on buying an official one and seeing if it makes a difference or not. Anyone else have that issue?
