I'm still running XP and totally happy with it. My most recent computer is over 5 years old and nearly running like it's new, so I have no intentions to upgrade soon.

I'll let the guniea pigs work out all the bugs for me first. Vista turned out to be a disaster, not sure I have higher expectations for W7.

How much is the retail supposed to be??? I got an email from my old school's computer store about Alumni discount of $30 for the upgrade.

Too much. I also have the opportunity to upgrade for $30 bucks but I feel the choices (Home Premium or Home Pro) are a bit limiting. I want Ultimate.

Here's the breakdown:

Premium / Professional / Ultimate
OEM $110 / $140 / $190
Retail Upgrade $120 / $200 / $220
Full Retail $200 / $300 / $320

Another reason why I hate MS--- how many versions do they really F'n need??? With Apple its ONE version....ONE.

Go for it!!! They just re-designed them and the specs are pretty darn impressive. Let me know if you get one...I can hook you up with all kinds of "free" programs.

Sweet! Thanks, I'll let you know. I was planning to get one this December-ish, but knowing that Apple will be implementing Core i7 processors into Macbooks next year makes me want to wait a bit.

Anyway, back to talking about OS's. I think both W7 and Snow Leopard are great operating systems technically, but Microsoft is going about delivering it to users all the wrong ways...again.

I will admit 7 is 100x better than that skidmark Vista. My friend who is an IT had 4 systems crash two days after installing Vista on all the computers in his office.

Wow, a windows thread that gets whored up by mac stuff.

Nothing wrong with Vista, have it on a laptop and never any problems. A buddy of mine is also in IT has has a macbook that has given him nothing but problems.

I'm just calling it like I see it in my experience. I already said that I think both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard are great operating systems and I'm upgrading to the former soon, but when it comes down to costs, I don't think it's even worth debating about. Well, it's something worth bringing up, but not for too long.

Vista wasn't a horribly bad experience for me, at least not as bad as the rep it's built up, but it wasn't impressive either. It was a resource hog, it had compatibility issues, and plainly it didn't work as well for me as XP did. Good for you and your IT friend who encountered no problems using Vista, but generally you don't speak for the majority.

A colleague at work has been using the RC and absolutely loves it. I'll be upgrading at home because I have Vista and absolutely hate it. but at work I'm on XP, it would be too much trouble to upgrade there.

Using 7 right now on a new system, works great. And MUCH better than Vista. Things run faster, and the annoying stuff from Vista is gone. Taskbar is much better too.

Although honestly, there still isn't much of a point to upgrade from XP--Windows 7 doesn't offer average users anything that they need, of course it looks better but as far as features the only thing I think that is something the average user would care about is a better Windows Update system---out of the box it supports most hardware without having to download anything, and for the stuff that it doesn't have drivers for you can run update and it can usually find something that's compatible, I've only had to install like one thing.

I have a Vista laptop and desktop that have had zero problems, so I'm not going to spend the money on an upgrade when everything's working fine as is. I will probably be replacing our older home desktop this Spring and I guess that's when I'll get familiar with the Windows 7. We'll see if it impresses me enough to upgrade the other two.
